So during this recession, do you think you will lose your job this year?

My opinion is that no job will be safe this year. This is going to be a recession like never before, maybe even a depression.

Don't have one to lose personally, im a student.

However I agree.
I don't think that any job is safe in this "economic climate" as its popularly being referred to now.

Who knows what's next to go really...

No I won't. My department was cut to under a third of the staff and so they can't afford to let go of anyone else. Infact, they've actually had to hire a couple of people to cover those who jumped ship first.

Surely if the going gets tough they have the option to replace you with cheap labour though.

God you're a happy soul aren't you! We've been encouraged to go flexi which I'm actually quite glad about. Usually it's a sign of trouble but the fact we've done it so early is quite reassuring as it should hopefully mean minimal redundancies.

To have a recession we have to have at least 2 quaters or <0 GDP growth. We have not yet had that.

I think it would have to be extremely serious before I'd lose mine. There have been some big cost cutting exercises, but nothing that has affected headcount yet.

Safe jobs:

Police
Teachers
Medical bods
Armed Forces
Undertakers
Utility workers
...sure there will be more...

Errm my best mate works for capita and has heard of impending redundancy. It's not just companies involved with property that are affected

They happen all the time in Capita, but it's nothing to do with the ecnonomy. It's just the way that Capita work (they're an outsourcing company after all). They're there to cut costs. It depends what side of the fence you're on.
