best satnav <£100

well, i recently bought my missus the Navigon 2200 (I think it was?) which has free Traffic updates and stuff. Have to say for the money its brilliant - comparable to much more expensive tomtoms...

It was from Halfords when they had their pre-xmas sales on.

You can get the 520 for just over £100 which can then be software and map upgraded to a 530

You did say <£100 which was why I assumed you were seeking entry point - hence the One V4 suggestion :)

520 would make an excellent purchase - I owned a 720 before I had a Sat Nav installed in my car and it was an excellent piece of kit.
Only complaint was dire battery life - but not an issue so long as you have the cigarette charger with you.

TomTom still have a map sale on for a few more days too - so you can pick up 1 year of updates and traffic updates for around £20 each (a new map is typically >£20).

If you buy it now you get a 30 day map guarantee to bring it to the current level. Make sure to update the software version before you use the map guarantee thou.

ordered the 520 except i need to send them my bank statement/letterhead which is annoying, might have to wait from the bank to get a statement as dont think i have one.

nice one :)

Just to clarify, i went on a long journey yesterday and can confirm my tomtom 520 with updated firmwire shows all the stuff from the latest ones such as lane guidance etc. Pretty cool! :D pleased!

The traffic on the new version works pretty well as well, if you do a few journeys the TMC thingy is really useful.

Not sure if its the same with the 520 but the current software version from Tom Tom is causing loads of issues with my 920. Other users have reported the same problems- stuttering speach when using computer voices (the ones needed for street names, traffic alerts etc.), other random glitches here and there and the bluetooth is rendered useless. Two months on and there is still no sign of a fix from TomTom. Other points to note are that the traffic module is very clumsy- About 5ft long and needs to be stretched out along and up the screen to work properly, my Navman had a 4inch wide rubber ariel which was much neater. Also the mount is utter rubbish. My £100 Navman never fell off the screen, My Tom Tom which originally sold for over £300 was given the nickname Tom Tom bounce after the first trip with it. Wetting the sucker helps but also leaves nice ring marks all over your screen that need cleaning off each time.

Whatever model you decide to go for I'd make sure it was a TomTom of some sorts simply for the latest map guarentee.

Thats strange as other than being bloody slow to start my 530 is running perfectly on the latest version.

Is it a proper 530 or an upgraded 520? It might only be the 920 that has problems, I know its got accelerometers and stuff in it that the other models don't so it might be the case that the processer and RAM are slightly more stressed as standard so the update has taken it over the edge slightly causing the slow down issues?

How do you change the 520 to a 530? I'm looking for a £100 tomtom so this would be good!

Just another thing would I be able to add maps of europe?

Hi, not sure on the adding maps of europe but the 720 only costs about £10 or so more and can be updated just like the 520 and that would get all the latest maps once you updated.

Basically its not tricky at all to set up, you just buy the tomtom 520, install tomtom home 2 from the internet (don't use the cd..its crap!). Then once the firmwire is done, you do the "latest map guarentee within 30 days of purchase" , as long as you have the last firmwire and the most recent maps (which support lane guidance etc , unlike the older map versions) then you get all the latest features of the much more expensive ones and at least for me, i've had no drawbacks at all yet or glitches. Apparently you need to do the firmwire first, then the maps and you absolutely MUST make a backup onto your computer of the tomtom's contents just incase you get any problems, which apparently does happen on occasion and causes a LOT of problems getting it sorted unless you have a backup.

If i was being really picky, i'd say the newest maps seem slightly slower to run, so the motion isn't quite as smooth as "out of the box" but its still smoother than the tomtom v4 / tomtom xl ones out of the box (the 266mhz ones vs the 400mhz on the 520).
