Hiding stuff on your PC... What is your method?

Hi there, following on from my thread about password managers, i would like to ask the community another question:

I have some "personal" files on my pc that i would like to keep private :p . I currently have the files buried deep within some system folders on the c: drive. however, my pc is used by other people in my household and although they are not technically savvy, i would rather not have them stumble across these files.

I am looking for an application or technique that would allow me to hide these files without having anything obvious show that i am hiding anything. For example; access denied messages or programs clearly stating "HIDE YOUR P0RN" (oops )..

I do have a multi logon environment so i could go down the permissions route.

So, how do you hide yours ?

you could simply have another partition and remove the disc letter in volume manager when you dont want it accessed. readd it to access your files again.

would be totally invisible, unless ofcourse they notice the missing drive space, or visit the computer management dialog. :p

If you use Truecrypt to create a hidden volume, create a rescue disk and don't forget the password. Is there any scenario, other than hardware failure, that would render the encrypted files unreadable?

easier just to create an encrypted file in truecrypt rather than go through the hassle of a hidden volume if its just to keep the family out

truecrypt truecrypt truecrypt!
When you make the encrypted container, assign it a keyfile - something on a USB stick you keep around your neck - and no one else need ever know about your midget pron addiction :p

If it's your machine, just set everyone up as a 'Limited User' and yourself as the sole Administrator.

If you keep your goat porn under your 'Users' directory, they will never see it. They will also be denied access to Computer Management / Disk Management. Bear in mind that if they manage to boot up with a LiveCD, all bets are off. :p

If you have Vista Ultimate or Linux, you can encrypt the whole OS partition / drive. IIRC, recent versions of TrueCrypt can do this too.

Encrypting an entire partition or drive prevents people from viewing the files if they boot from CD / USB or move the drive to another computer.

Agreed - hidden volume is maybe a tad unnecessary unless someone is likely to torture you until you divulge your first TrueCrypt password ^_^

c:\Users\bledd\Desktop\Porn

auto login, so anyone could get to it

my gf never really uses my pc, and i only use it for porn and gaming

she wouldn't really care if she saw it anyway
