Geforce GTX 280 6-pin + 8-pin power connector problems!

Can anyone help?

Just bought a few upgrade components, including the XFX Geforce GTX 280 and a Gigabyte Odin GT 550W PSU. Ridiculously, the PSU only comes with two PCI-E 6-pin power connectors, while the GPU requires one 6-pin and one 8-pin. The GPU comes with an adaptor to convert two molex to one 6-pin. So basically I am stuck with no way to connect up the 8-pin power to the GPU!

Has anyone else been having the same problem? Did I just buy the wrong PSU? Is this common? I've seen an adaptor, which with delivery will cost fifteen quid. Can't help but feel the GPU should have come with an adaptor, if it's not a common enough connection for a decent PSU to cater for.

Should have got an adaptor that connects the 8 pin on the card to your 2 6 pin cables, then another to connect the 6 pin on card to 2 molex. No? If not contact the seller and tell them it's missing.

I have the two molex to one 6-pin adaptor. That came with the card. But no 8-pin adaptor. I bought it from OCUK, have emailed them about it. What a pain, will probably have to wait at least a couple of days before I can try out my new setup!

Didn't think OCUK dealt with XFX anymore. Might be worth checking on the XFX site to see if the package is supposed to come with the 8-pin adaptor. Thought it was standard with most manufacturers but you never can tell.

Thanks Bradley, makes me feel a lot better!

I did try to check, but OCUK didn't mention what PCIE connectors it had (only that it had two). I assumed the GPU would have any necessary adaptors.

I bought the XFX GPU from scan btw, just bought the PSU (plus motherboard, CPU, cooler and memory) from OCUK.

I needed a 6 to 8 pin pci-e connector recently, I sent Seasonic a quick email asking where I would be able to purchase one, got an email back about 5 mins later asking where I was located, they got in touch with a uk seasonic dealer for me, next day I got two 6 to 8 pin pci-e connectors in the post, for free

Was quite impressed

...and I bought a GTX280 from overclocks last week and it came with two 8 pin adapters and no 6 pin adapter. I am going to write to them and get a replacement adapter sent.

Ill trade you one of your 8 pin adapters for a 6 pin? My GTX280 didnt come with an 8 pin adapter.

This is one thing I'm a bit annoyed about, the fact that so many moderately highend PSUs on sale nowadays don't come with 8-pin connectors. I recently upgraded my PSU but I had to do quite a bit of digging around to get a deal I was happy with (NorthQ BM Modular 850W) that included all the connectors.

Probably a lot safer than my previous setup, an oldschool OCZ 470W which doesn't even have 6pin connectors (and only 2 SATA connectors for that matter).

I had a 6pin->2*4pin adapter plugged into the 6pin port. Then in the 8pin port, I had an 8pin->2*6pin adapter. And yep, you guessed it, I then had 2 6pin->2*4pin adapters plugged into that for a total of 6 incoming power molexes!

Can't you just plug the 6-pin plug into an 8-pin socket? it worked on the 2900XT.

My GTX285 has 2 x 6-pin sockets, odd.
