I was waiting at a junction at night when I noticed 1 of 2 youths in my pessenger mirror point to my car & then start running towards my passenger door.
This youth scaled a metal railing & was 2 meters from my door when thankfully the junction was clear & I was able to pull off.

At first could not understand why someone would want to car-jack my old mondeo, but then realised I had a Sat-Nav on my dashboard.
Do you think i'm being paranoid in thinking this youth was after my Sat-Nav?

I thought of keeping a tyre wrench under my seat & if some 'lazy dole dossing yob' opened my passenger door then I could bash him in the face with my wrench. Would it be legal to do this as surely it would be self defence if some yob tried get into my car when at a junction?
If its illegal to bash someone like this in the face then are Sat-Nav owners expected to just let these people take their dashboard mounted navigator?
As I would not expect the police to be interested/able to catch these people.

No it's wouldn't be legal. If you were stopped you would be at risk of being charged with carrying an offensive weapon. The only way it would be ok was if your entire car was filled with tools and it wasn't obvious what it was there for.
Does you car have the capability to autolock the doors when you pull away?
Also, by the time you had reached for the weapon, they - along with whatever they were grabbing - would be long gone.

Yeah my mondy only unlocks the drivers door unless I blip the remote twice to unlock all doors (when carrying a passenger).

I thought keeping a tyre wrench under the drivers seat would not be thought of as keeping a offensive weapon as its there to remove a wheel in the event of a puncture?

What if I drove off whilst the perp was half inside my car & I just happen to bash his legs on a nearby lampost, would that be legal?

My car didnt come with a complete toolkit, so I carry a 3foot breaker bar and the necessary sockets to change a wheel. ;)

Legally, you have to wait for them cave your face in with whatever weapon they are brandishing, at which point, you can then lawfully use harsh language to see them off.. ;)

It is sad, but when it comes to agrevated anything, the law is very grey when it comes to self defense etc, but if you aren't injured and they are seriously injured, it would seem stacked in their favour, despite them breaking and entering your property with clear intent to harm (i.e. carrying a weapon)..

But as everyone is saying, locking all doors would seem another one way of reducing the odds of a successful attack these days..

Strange that, I'm in exactly the same position, have to keep it behind my drivers seat as there is nowhere to secure it in the boot . .

Ditto, also my cars ECU is in the boot, so I wouldnt want a breaker bar loose in there which could risk harming my cars brain. :)

...in which case it would be in the boot :p The police aren't that thick. "Yes officer, I just happened to be off to baseball practice and my passenger was on his way for a round of golf. Poor chap can only afford a 9 iron though." :p

What's wrong with locking the door, stops them pretty well.

What? Which ECU? I know of nothing with "the" ECU in the boot where the engine isn't also in the boot.

no it wouldnt be legal for a start. however, lets be honest, you wouldnt have the thing out in time and have space to swing it to any effect anyway. so in future, do what you did, drive off.

I have an MR2 Turbo, the engine is in the middle and the ECU is behind the boot carpet on the bulkhead between the boot and engine compartment.

Wheel lock/baseball bat hybrids are on sale and AFAIK they are legal.
