all reviews seem to be good and it's below £50... why spend 100 more on, for example, the Logitech Z-5500 THX Certified 5.1 Speaker System (both on OCUK. i know nothing about speakers and want a 5.1 system (i think)and wondered why you would spend almost 200 when 45 is possible?alos what does the "W" of the speaker mean, i know it means watts but what is a reasonable number for each type of speaker (satalite, bass etc.)

Logitech Z-5500 sound better, have more features and do decoding, so good for use with consoles and other devices, that's why. :)

decoding? and sounds better meaning what? louder? clearer to a higher volume?

Decoding, you can plug them into a console or so and get 5.1 audio through them. (DTS/Dolby)

They have better satellites and a better subwoofer, they will also go a lot louder.

Remote is also very useful. :0

W or Watts means absolutely nothing in the real world. The Beatles famously played a stadium gig in New York with 100W of total amplification. Even a 2 or 3 W amplifier will go uncomfortably loud. The real benefit of a big, powerful, amplifier is you can drive bigger magnets in speakers to move further so theoretically you can get more volume. In reality, the speakers in these systems are fairly ordinary and will go VERY loud indeed for a small amount of power. It won't be especially clean noise, but it will be loud.

I always say you should buy the best at your budget point. If you want a 5.1 system and you have £45 then buy the X-540's. If you have more, buy a better one, but be aware that you're probably not going to be able to tell the difference in games unless you have a whoop-de-doo soundcard installed. Always spend your money primarily on the source. A poor source will sound carp on good speakers, but a good source will sound the best it can on poor speakers.

I'll have to agree with the previous psot regarding how much you want to spend.
I have a set of X-530's and they were cheap and cheerful, but are not so well shielded. It picks up fluctuations in my electrical circuit of the house.

I'm not sure about the 540's but I guess for the price, you get what you pay for. If you want quality sound, then your not going to find it at that price range.
