LOTRO Free Trial and anyone still play?

Yeah most of the quests to get to expert in a profession require you to kill something, which is a pain. I was lucky with scholar in that you only need to pick up an item from the ground. The mobs were all purple, but roamed enough to let you nip in and pick up the item.

I have to kill a named aurochs near Esteldin for expert tailor though, and I just can't be bothered to level the toon with that profession (warden, 's boring me silly)

A friendly kin member is the answer. (Or if you play on Eldar just let me know and I'll give you a hand). But really, ultimately what you want is to level up 4 characters you like to play and get all the professions with them, because as I said above, even if you get all the tiers of a profession, except for the gathering professions where you can sell popular raw materials, its the crit items that are going to make you money, and hitting those crits profitably requires tools you can only wield at high levels, not your standard smithing hammer, pick-axe etc.

Well, I am playing as a burglar and took the explorer as my profession mainly because I knew I could get plenty of resources with it and also knock up some armour for me.

Thanks for the links!

Just got to find a kinship now :D

Then maybe when I hit the 14 day trial end I will sub to it for a month.

Explorer is the way to go and stick to gathering. When I crafted 7 months ago my level 50 was just about maxed in crafting and according to my calculations I could buy medium armour for less than is cost me to make (includes price of all materials, rares etc). I do not know if it is any different now but I would sell all your raws and rares. My new level 24 hunter has about 9 gold which is a lot more than my crafting minstrel had at the same level.

I'm downloading the trail now as i am a bit bored of wow and guild wars. If some one whos in a good active guild wants to refare me as friend or some one who plays a lot wants to make a alt with me , if i decide i like it and buy it you will get a month free. My e mail is in my trust.

The game has grown so much there is no aqlternative but to download a whole lot of data. In fact even the Mine of Moria expansion downloads, its just not activated until you pay for it.

Just leave it downloading overnight or something. All I can say is once you are in, its worth every mb and every penny :)

It's not going to download a load of out of date updates if that's what you mean, it'll update the updater first, then download the latest version of the game. But it's going to be a whopper of an update, even without the expansion, they've done a load of extra zones and content since the game launched.

And the fact that you do download the whole expansion even if you dont have a key for it.

downloaded the 8gb game with my new rig last weekend... didnt enjoy it, maybe i need to give it another go but it just seems like your not involved in the fighting.. a bit like LOTR COnquest all you do is click at an enemy until hes dead.

wasnt a big fan of the camera angle either, with all my equipment i turned it all up to max but all you see is high resolution cobbles in the ground... i thought id be able to see the horizon and with Dx10 it would have cool stuff like the rays of god etc.. but nope.

maybe im being a bit harsh and i need to give it another chance but i didnt enjoy it first time round.

might give it another go tonight.

Got the game, downloaded, activated the free 30 days. Was indeed a whopper of an update... which stalled twice! In any event im in now as a burglar on the EN-RP server, any friendles about? Halbrek is the char name.

Enjoying it actually, interesting intro but I would agree the combat is quite static. I guess im just used to Wow where a button press equals a whack whereas here your waiting for the timer to clear on even your fastest skills and in the meantime on auto-attack - that make sense? kind of feels a little less involved.

Has pulled me in though, so ill be on for a while and see how it develops, mostly in the evening.

i've downloaded the trial too, i wasn't that hooked to start with (i started with a burglar) but changed to a hunter which is nearly lvl 20 now and it's starting to draw me in. the crafting thing could be quite interesting, the unfortunate thing is that i can't really try it out as i can't use the trader or the mailbox in the trial version! (i can understand why).

the game seems massive, there's loads of quests and everyone has been pretty helpful so far. the only annoyances i have are the blocky pixel shadows (as on the previous page) and the fact that it can take ages to travel anywhere and find anything. i think that's why with my first char i wasn't enjoying it, i'm kind of getting the hang of it now.

so, if i go to buy the Mines of Moria expansion, am i missing out by not getting the first one? i think i went on the snowborne (sp) server so if there's an OCUK kinship or something to join that would be good!

edit: just to say i agree with the combat thing, it does feel a bit distant, especially when i kill someone using a different attack to the button i pressed! given all the rest of its' faults, that was the one thing I really like about AoC - involved combat.

edit number 2: just to say i've found a compilation pack of volumes 1 and 2 on the rainforest place for £15. looks like i shall be purchasing it :D

As you go up the levels the skills you get become more interesting and fighting becomes more involved, like hunters can set a trap on the ground (a big circle), you stand on the other side and when the enemy walks on it towards you he moves slower and you get more arrow shots at him, or lore masters who can stun an enemy for 30 secs, which is useful when two enemies attack you at the same time, so you stun one while you deal with the other. In fellowships each class has its own job and playing that job involves learning how to use the special skills you have.

Give it time and you'll love it. :)

i havent played WoW but i know others who found the combat strange to begin, but with time you will grow to understand the combat mechanics are actually really good and a mix between button mashing and reactionary skills.

i have a lvl 29 burg alt which although has quite low DPS he has great crowd control and excellent grp based skills, but its all about the initial attack and then immediately debuffing your enemy. The main benefit is stealth and later on in the game its brilliant being able to sneak past tons of enemies to achieve a quest goal whereas say a guardian has to fight for ages to get to the same place..

burgs are also the bane of all creeps in PvP as they can keep a target dazed and unleash hell on them knowing that they have plenty of escape skills if trouble arrives.. i hate them tbh

persevere with game as once you hit the mid lvl 20+ zones the game picks up quite a lot, and obviously joining a kin will increase the games depth.. gl

My captain is level 19 at the moment on Laurelin, I really enjoy the depth of this game, a lot of quest which if you read the story is quite interesting. Also I love the fact that there is a main quest telling you a story and having you group with other people to achieve.

I kinda agree on the combat, it may seem a bit tedious at first but I got used to it.

And thats without going into the fellowship skills, its really cool when you hit those combos.

Just started playing the trial version this weekend, it's my first MMORPG since the Grandad of them all, MUD on the C64 (Apart from a very brief flirt with Everquest which lasted no more than a couple of hours, some years back).

So far I am enjoying it, but I am totally lost with all the terminology and strategy involved. I am blindly running around doing the simple quests and have no idea how to interact with other human players.

I am a Dwarf Champion called "Flopili" on the Eldar (En) server, at least I think thats what it was called. I will see out this 7 day trial and make my mind up if I go further with it.

Edit: The reason I am on a 7 Day trial was that I actually bought the game in store for £10, thinking that I would give it a go for the 30 days you get thrown in with the purchase. Alas, after installing it and doing the massive update, I tried to activate it and failed. It turns out my code has been used already, even though it was a sealed box and I have to return it to the retailer, if it is still trading by the time I get the opportunity to return it. Luckily it had a 7 day trial code in the box, so at least I could get started.

had the same issue but when I looked in renew subs it said my payment wasn't due for 30 days. So I emailed billing and they sorted it pretty quick. Check in renew sub and see if it says that when you try to set up a payment.
