How did you pay your way through University?

Sounds interesting, what kind of businesses/ventures were they if you dont mind me asking?

When I was at college/school I did a lot of buying and selling. At uni I used to organize parties/events and have my own promotions team. I'm still semi doing that but mainly took a step back as it was only really fun when we used to go out every night, the perks/social aspect was amazing as everyone knew who they had to come to for the best nights:D I then went into sales, contracting to a company I'm currently working with and I'm also a trader, using equities and forex.

I had a grant for my degree which paid for rent and bills and my parents paid for food. Post grad i used my savings that i earned from working for 2 years + and took out a professional studies loan.

My Dad earns a stupid amount of money which means I get a terrible loan every year usually around the £500 a year mark so my part time wages are crucial to me going to uni!
The minimum loan is £3k/year?! Your parents only have to earn something like £45k between them to end up getting that... which isn't huge.

I took the loan and stuffed it in ISAs and suchlike. Parents paid tuition fees, and I lived off money from my parents (which paid rent, and everything else.)

Loan to cover the ridiculous tuition fees.
Student loan of £4k/year as mum doesn't earn over the threshold.
overdraft of £1200, usually nearly maxxed out.
£250 a month from my deceased fathers pension that still gets paid to me whilst in full time education.
savings account that was given to me when i was 18, parents had been saving up since i was born. pay rent mostly out of this but most of it will be used for travelling after uni or towards a deposit for a house.
also earn ~£2000 a year from sports betting and internet poker.

i go out minimum 3 times a week every week, and have bought a tv, xbox360, lots of computer bits and a laptop. im never short for money. helps that newcastle is a ridiculously cheap night out of course.

I saved up a load of cash before I went. Still had £9k's worth of student loan though. But most of that went on tuition fees and accomodation.

The goverment did (back in 1998)! LEA paying for my fees = me boozing and general lording it up.

I love the fact that because I had defered for a year, they tried to get out of paying my fees. Scallies!

What? That's a ridiculous system! My g/f and I earn more than that between us and though we live a decent enough life renting for a pittance if we had a mortgage or kids to support we'd have nothing! Definitely wouldn't be able to find a couple of £K each year for tuition fees

The system has changed a bit now tuition fees have gone up nearly 10x. You can get a maintenance loan (the £4k, going down to £3k if your parents earn £45k), and there's a new tuition fees loan to add to that - not sure how it works, as it's after my time. I was still on the £1k/year fees!

Iv got the max loan i can get (which annoyingly is the the 3k a year one) plus a loan for my tuition fees. Mum payed for my accomidation last year, but this year im paying for it out of the inheritance from my dad.

Im looking at 18k debt plus my overdraft, could blow some of my saving paying it back afterwards but right now there doesnt seem much point till im working full time

Luckily parents paid rent and tuition, so I had the loan for food, also worked all summer holliday and had pratime jobs when needed, apart from the final year which I was just to busy with.

I went to my local University (And still do, last ever year for me now though) mostly because of the bizarre situation with student finance. Because you are judged not on yourself but on your parents income, I was entitled to nothing but the minimum loan, therefore to go away to my other preffered University would have meant I'd have needed to take out a commercial loan in addition to my student loan simply to afford living costs, or ask my parents to fund my way through Uni. I didn't want to do this.

So, I stayed at home, had a great time and had my student loan each year + part time work. I also worked full time for a year on my placement, and work during the holidays. This enables me to pay my own undergrad fees (I had no LEA assistance) and also leaves money left over to indulge my hobbies of cars and computers. I don't use my overdraft and my only debt is the Student Loan.

Retarded isnt it that it goes on your parents wages! It is MY dept and education not theirs! So my parents hve £££s taken off them in the 40% tax bracket and it gets given to middle aged muppets doing social sciences at a poo uni (in grants) - Who never pay their loan back anyway as they get a poor job, then my parents have to pay for me to go uni on top of that - I hate taking money, and I don't ever ask them for it. I have always worked since being 16 and work full time in university holidays in order to cover the thousands the maintenance loan is short each year, but sometimes my parents have to chip in.
The student loan is thousands short anyway.

I don't drink that often, don't smoke, have an 8 year old micra, don't have a flashy phone and don't go on holiday, and I am still permanently broke.

I have paid some of my loan off and not taken a loan this year (all out my own pocket, not my parents), but next year I will have to take the full loan again.

Why not? surely they want to give you the best possible start in life and I will certainly be doing the same if I ever have kids.
But I agree the system is retarded.

No, because I started Uni before the topup fees so paid £1125 a year.
the actual fees paid are in the region of 10k a year, and have been for ages, the LEA make up the difference, it was a comment on your lack of LEA support
