Economic downturn but still paying silly money.

Pompeys entire squad is easily worth 35m.

Who out of that squad is worth anything?

34 year old Sol campbell?
38 year old David James?
Kranjcar?
Utaka?
Distan?
Crouch?
Nugent?
Johnson?

Defoe didnt raise any money because they still OWED spurs money for several other transfers.
The clubs wage bill, is estimated to be 90% of its turn over.

They will fold, because they are a shockingly badly run club.

well someone above said £100m, but even so - I dont think its as bad as all that, but I guess who really knows apart from those inside

At least Diarra's transfer paid a lot of the debt

See, you are all doing it! ........ I mean, talking millions of club debt or £250/500k A WEEK wages for one player as though it is natural and part of your daily lives. It is just not justifiable or acceptable in my opinion, for anyone to be paid that sort of money (stick with soccer, never mind films) when 'we' are all tightening our belts and hoping that we still have a job next month.

You will have already guessed that I am not a great soccer fan but that is not the point; I know people who are still earning less than £10,000 a year let alone 20 times that a ******* week!

I don't know what the answer is but I am interested in the ideas being floated around by those of you who are a little more 'in the know'.

"we" you do releause that all the premiership clubs make the main coin from TV rights, the FA pimped out he league to the world and makes close to a billion pound from it, its the most exciting league in the world, look at this season its the most exciting one so far.

You are looking into it too much, its still a weekend thing to a lot of people in this country.

Debt isn't a problem though as long as you can afford to keep up the repayments , Its like having a mortgage of £100k , your in debt of £100k but you can make the payments and live your life as normal.

And it is acceptable to be paid that amount of money because normally that player will make that amount of money back for the club. Kaka could very well be different but in this case the owners of Man City are using them to advertise there country as Dubai is getting all the tourists. So with all this media attention it is indirectly advertising Abu Dhabi.

I disagree with what you're saying here. The FA should have a duty of care to ensure that clubs remain stable and able to sustain themselves without the backing of a sole investor.
Whilst this i true, most companies can run themselves into the ground in theory. Why should football be any different?

Did you hear about that on Jackanory or something? That is absolute fantasy.

If Jermaine Pennant's performances and off field commercial revenues are going to net Portsmouth more than £50,000 per week I'll eat my hat.

Well if they have a team of players and they make revenue of say £100 million a year with a wage bill of £90 million and a profit of £10million. Then obviously these players have made there money back as if there was no team , there would be no profit.*

* - Yes i know i have simplified this by a large amount but if a club posts a profit then the players have made back there wage bill for that year.

Or they could cut the price of tickets/Sky subs to help the working class. You can go watch Kaka in a AC Milan shirt for ~£7 as people just got sick of paying silly prices to go watch overpaid playboys and crowds dropped. The same thing will happen in england if the standard of living keeps dropping while players continue to get huge wages.

Nah, if you look at the stats the premiership has the highest attendance ratio (fans:seats) of any of the big leagues, on average our grounds are over 90% full. That's in spite of them probably (guess; I haven't seen stats for it) being some of the most expensive tickets.

Don't forget that football no longer relies on the working class. Football is now 'trendy' and watched by millions, and the clubs which pay the big wages are packing out their stadia every week. Take Arsenal for example, no league game at the Emirates has ever even gone on general sale, never mind actually be at risk of not being a sellout.

Fans are literally queueing up to shell out their cash and it amazes me that the clubs haven't hiked their ticket prices yet further. Price out Joe Bloggs and his richer mate, John Blegg will take his place.
