My house mate just made a bold claim that non-Christians have no morals
The discussion started from this thread:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17966588
In which I said its harsh to ask for Christians, who says they would be better than anyone else, and he said they have better morals like no swearing, no sex before marriage, and implied that non-Christians would be terrible for type of job...

People either have or don't have morals, I've never associated them with religion since there are good and bad people in every one.

Indeed, religion just tries to standardise morals, doesn't mean it's effective, nor that non-religious people can't have non-standard moral configurations.

religion has nothing to do with morals at all. Anyone that truely believes all christians have better morals the non christians is a complete idiot to put it bluntley.

By non-Christians, does your housemate mean atheists and agnostics or does he/she include Jews, Mulsims, Buddhists, etc?

People have different morals certainly but I'd say that few have no morals. You can't even say that all Christians have the same morals since there's plenty of different interpretations of the bible.

Thats my thinking :)

I think he means everyone to be honest knowing him :(

There is one of those funny church places just up the road from me and they think nothing of playing thier awful "musical bells" loudly and after 8pm desturbing the whole area. If I played my music that loud there would be complaints.

For me, morals are a short-cut to doing the right thing, when you don't have enough time to think everything through. With that in mind, having a ready made set of morals like out of the Bible that you think about every day might make it easier to make the 'right' decision on the spot; but Christians certainly aren't generally any kinder, more truthful etc. when you get down to it. At least in my experience.

It constantly staggers me that some people think that morals and religion have to be linked in any way.

Incidentally I consider it morally wrong to force any sort of religous belief on to others and in the case of children as little more than child abuse. (note this is differant to religous education , I have no problem with children being taught about religeon in general and taught an understanding of the various major faiths).

Oh and I also consider it morally wrong to suggest that someone else you do not know has no morals so your mate is a hypocritical idiot :)

I'm struggling to find a way to put this any more simply than your mate is wrong. Just plain flat out wrong.

Not swearing doesn't make you more moral, you can not swear but you could rape people. Not having sex before marriage doesn't make you moral, you could still beat up bunny rabbits and huff kittens. It's a stupid distinction to make, we all have morals to some degree, some people are influenced by religious teachings, some are influenced by the World around them, some by their family and so forth, there are a myriad of different ways to form morals - Christianity does not have the monopoly on it.

I'm glad people agree! I thought this thread could go either way tbh!
I vastly agree with Domi about forcing religion upon children, I believe that if it wasn't force onto children it would die out within a few generations :)
And would cause a lot less children to rebel against their parents forced oppression and do stupid things, like drugs and beating people up for instance :(

Also rubbish, there are plenty of people taking up religion who have never been taught it.
