hi all,

where's a good place to go on a family holiday in the UK, atm I am considering wales or cornwall/devon...

Just noticed that the bay of oxwich got voted one of the best holidays in the uk and looks really nice, cant quite believe there are beaches like that in the UK. Shows how ignorant I am!

We're not the types for the pontins type of "fun"... I can't stand the activities etc. that go on at those sort of places..

we're looking for somewhere with nice beaches, castles and things of historical interest and also things for kids to enjoy.

thanks for any info.

wales has its merits but...

Try Northumberland the coast is spectacular with fantastic empty beaches (there is a reason they are empty , it gets very cold) and more castles per mile than anywhere else in the world.

The coastal route includng Lindisfarne, Alnwick ,Bamburgh , Warkworth and Dunstanburgh castles is one of those places you must see in your lifetime.

Hi, thanks for the info...

I don't think I mentioned that I'm looking for a holiday in the Summer, however, and I am really looking for somewhere a bit more southernly...

Can anyone recommend any decent caravan or lodge parks in Cornwall or nice places / parks to stay in Wales?

Smr, I'd look into Pembrokeshire for wales (I am looking for a nice place to stay there at the moment)
I'd also consider the campsite that has log cabbins near Weymouth (search for warmwell) its got a ski slope on site. Theres nice places to visit near by. Plenty for the kids to do and its fairly cheap also.

I quite enjoyed centreparcs as a nipper.

It's not the Butlins style activities, more renting a nice lodge type house for a week or so and being able to go and do stuff like ride bikes round the woods and sail boats etc.

Come over to NI (or to the republic), its green, can be warm and you'll have a better excuse for not understanding the locals :D (or the same blank look i have most days...)

Plus its fairly cheap getting here (and after reading the OP again theres a fair few castles and battle grounds over here)

I spent many a happy summer weekend at St Ives Bay Holiday Park when growing up in Cornwall. It's within reach of most of the myriad attractions around there and very near the A30 for anything further afield (Eden Project, basically).
However, although I don't know any specific places, I'd recommend finding a small campsite in the countryside near the beach around the Lizard. There are lots of little coves around there and they're proper beaches. At the most there'll be a small ice cream shop, and then nothing except sand and sea. Ideal.
