Hi All

Posted on here before Christmas inquiring about the 500 F4L IS lens

I looked on ParkCameras.com and it was £4099

now i come to look at it again today as i may have found the way of raising the stupid amount of money i need to buy it and its gone up nearly £900!!!!!!

WTF!!

how can manufacturers justify that increase!!

Nick

this was coming for a long time. It was posted on TP forums ages ago. You could have anticipated it and acted appropriately

not when they cost that much, takes some people along time to save up that kind of cash! and with them costing that much it wasnt something i was going to rush into!

This isn't just happening to Canon L lenses.
Some bodies have also increased in price.
The way things are going it will happen to all DSLR products that are manufactured in Japan.
As Gaffer has already stated, the pound is very weak against the yen.
Even the HK based suppliers are being hit with price increases.

The impending Nikon price rises are causing me to spend money I don't have (or at least that's my excuse!) :|

impending? welcome to last week they have already gone up massively, d700 has climbed ~200 quid everywhere

Some stores don't seem to have implemented price-rises on all items yet...unless the price-rises are on fewer items than I thought. Admittedly I'm not in the market for a d700...

Yeah it's not just L series. I'd been looking for a Canon 50mm f/1.4 and they were sold out everywhere locally. Came back into stock but they'd gone up by about £60!

Managed to grab a second hand one in the end though.

This is the same for Nikon and Canon on all camera lenses. The problem is the pound is very weak.

It is a shame, I live in Switzerland and earn swiss francs which have gone up strongly against the pound. It was looking like I could almost contemplate a D700 + 24-70mm by buying a UK import. Not any more.

Agreed. Im expecting stuff like electronics and components from Taiwan and China to go up in price too. Pound has gone down around 30% against these two currencies too, compared to a year ago. Hong Kong currency also down, from 16 to about 10.5.

The pound has lost 43% against the Japanese Yen over the last six months. The price of Japanese imports are going to be a very visible impact of the economic crisis.

Once again thanks to the positively god-like rg-Tom, i've got my hands on a 135mm f/2.0L pre-price rise price. Though it's not looking good for my 35mm 1.4L. At least my 24-70 2.8L is worth a shedload more now! :D

I hunted down the last Nikon 105mm f/2 DC in Europe at a particular chain-store that does part-exchange (price-matched to another chain-store to the pre-price hike price) which saved a fair bit...it has a scratch on the rear element which has gone back to Nikon to be repaired, but I really can't complain for the price.

from yesterday like but still http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7848591.stm interesting if the ps3 goes up in price as well what with the yen been so strong

At the moment it only seems to be affecting products assembled in Japan like DSLR bodies and lenses.
I believe that Sony use subcontract companies based in China like most big companies do.
However, I don't think the pound is going to improve against other currencies in the near future so we will probably see price hikes on general consumer electronic products.
It's bad enough as it is for retailers with current sales and what with their margins being quite tight, I can only see things getting worse for them.
