Totally out of the loop with tv's these days, and i notice that prices have tumbled since i last bought them, fast enough that it seems full HD 60" models are available for a couple of grand and less.

So, i call on our resident home cinema buffs to recommend me a set. Doesn't need to necessarily be a TV, a monitor is absolutely fine as audio is dealt with elsewhere.

Pioneer 50" Kuro

Sorry i should have been more specific, i would like a 60" or larger model. I realise that the budget means a compromise on quality when compared with smaller ones, but i am not a stickler for the absolute best on a telly. The weak point will be the feed into it (Sky) :)

Well you will either be paying £2.5-3k for an old set or some crap from hitachi or LG.

Honestly for a few £k it won't be a good 60, and at that size you will notice it with these brands. The 60 inch pioneer kuro is still about £4k though, but the 50 is the bargain of the moment at around £1700.

Put it this way:
- Cheap 60 by LG, samsung etc = Vectra VXR
- Kuro 60 = E92 M3

Kuro 50 is the same but just smaller :D

How big is your rom and what will you be using it for.

Casual TV viewing to accompany a projection setup, it will be simply fed with daytime rubbish, most of it not even in high def. Viewing distance approx 6.5M. I definitely want a 60", even it means perhaps holding off for a while for a better model.

Lets restructure the thread then, what is the best value (weighing up price to quality) 60" plasma on the market? At £4000 for the Kuro there is no way it is good value for money, quality simply does not matter to that extent :)

Why do you want a 60 then if you have a projector. The VFM is crap compared to a slightly smaller 50.

A panasonic 50" can be picked up for £1000

Because i was originally looking at 60's for around a couple of grand. Which seems great value and i would like a decent size upgrade from the 42" which is currently sitting there. 50" is too small and is not what i would like.

Cheaper panels will show up exactly how crappola the feed is.

Another vote for a Kuro (although I too wince at the price of a 60").

Gah, i suppose as per usual it would be best to just view the damn things myself. I am intrigued to see how "crap" these LG plasma's are, ive always thought LG were ok in this field :p

He doesn't need a 60" though, infact its pretty stupid getting a TV that big if you are only gonna give it crappy Freeview.

Surely a 50 will be enough for casual viewing, and the projector will be used for the hi-def stuff etc.

If it's being fed just a normal SD feed then get something like a 50 panasonic or even something like a 50 samsung. No point in going mad on a 60 from that distance when you will have a 90+ screen anyway.

Well that's the way I see it, 50 Kuro + £2k JVC projector + screen is much better than just going for a 60 Kuro.

I agree. Jez, u have kinda answered your own question, just get some settings for the LG from avforums, go to the shop, set it up, if u like what u see, buy it!

Personnally I would get the 50" panny, as it has better Pic quality. I had issues with my 42" panny last year, swapped it for a 42" sammy, the pic on the sammy is very good, the only "problem" is that the black levels on the sammy are not as deep and rich as the panny, but at least it works!!!!!

a lot of people on here & avforums were on panasonic hysteria mode at the time, but for me the two panny sets I had were total garbage and lost signal on freeview everytime, sammy has worked without issue! plus got a free 5 yr warranty!!! whhoooop whhooop

The Pioneer's are probably not the best VFM - But they certainly are the best TV's!

LX5090 or LX6090 - You cannot buy better TV's at this time.

Hehe the guy who wrote that is a complete muppet ....

Lack of power on/off switch forces the user to unplug the TV to switch it off.

No retard !!!!! It's under the bezel on the left hand corner :D:D:D

and you have to activate the HDMI sockets manually, which is not so easy.

OMG IT'S SOO HARD!!!! Press menu, go into relevant menu selection, activate HDMI, or maybe try the manual :D

However, these are all compromisable for the incredible performance offered by this plasma television.

Ah he got something right.

Read the review below or read Phil Hintons review of the similar KRP over at avforums:

I was viewing hte 60" LG in a shop the other day, i was pretty impressed with the PQ on it, it obviously wasnt in the same league as the 58" Panny 7 series (which can be had for about £1800 now) but it was decent.

Id personally go for the 58" Panasonic rather than the 60", i doubt you would notice 2 inches.
