LOTRO Free Trial and anyone still play?

Im on Eldar, but only level 10 at the moment. Flopili is my name (Dwarf/Champion).

Cool, if you need anything just let me know. I have a lvl 13 Elf/Lore Master I play from time to time when not doing kinship stuff with my main, so we could do some quests together.

Also if you have a profession where you need someone to boil hides for you, just send to Akagrim (my dwarf/guard) and I'll mail them back boiled.

I'm told the community in LOTRO is very mature, which is great, is this true? Are there many guilds about that are recruiting? Social side of MMO's is what makes them great IMO.

Will give this a go. :)

I have purchased the Shadows of Angmar/Mines of Moria pack now, so I should be able to interact with people properly.

I still haven't got my head round the subtleties of the game and am still doing the 'Kill so many of these', 'Go find this' kind of quests to level up. I haven't looked at magic / trade / manufacturing / guilds etc yet.

The trouble is, I seem to spend forever running around the map looking for places to complete a particular quest. You have pointers on the HUD Map for certain locations (Thorins Hall, Nogland etc), it would be nice if you had one to point you in the general direction of a selected quest location as sometimes the description given is a little vague. At the moment I have about 3 quests active where I can't find the locations mentioned in the quest dialogue.

I am a total noob, but enjoying the game immensely.

I've been playing on Laurelin for over a year now in a nice Kin that isn't too hung up on RP. We play on the RP server to sift out all the kiddlies migrating from their l33t WoW servers so if you're after a nice laid back server where people are just interesting in enjoying themselves then Laurelin is my choice.

Saying that, I think that generally Lotro attracts people who either are disillusioned with WoW or who don't fit the profile of the 'typical' WoW teenie-griefer.

Eldar and Snowbourne are both very very good servers if you prefer a (very) slightly more hardcore approach to gaming.

Its worth pointing out that PVP isn't a big part of Lotro at all so there is next to no griefing or strife. Most folks I know are either here to RP or wander around PVE style exploring and stroy-questing.

If anyone from here makes it to Lotro, give me a shout, email in Trust. Or give me a nudge in game on Carathir or Karathaz.

Has a map for each area showing most of the quest mobs, POIs and key locations. Its a bit of a cheat sheet and I wouldn't recommend using it wholesale but if you're looking to clear up a few sticky quests or plan a lap or two around the Lone Lands, its fantastic.

If you're on Laurelin and looking for a Kin, give me a shout as per my message above.

I've just finished a trial of this but can not find the pricing list. Can someone post the subscription costs for 1,3,6 and 12 months. Also what is the founders price plan?

Eric.

Eric if you pop on to the COGA website where you created your account it will detail the charging plans for your products in there.

IIRC Founders Plan was a subscription offer to player active from day one where they could take out a Lifetime subscription for a one-off fee.

Cheers for that, I think I will set up another character and give Laurelin a try. It would be good to try out a few character classes and areas.
I think I might go for something with slightly longer legs than a Dwarf, I tend to waddle around Eldar.

Is there any PvP in the game? I'm very big on PvP. PvE is too repetitive and predictable for my liking tbh. Only thing I really use PvE for is levelling/earning and learning the class, the real fun is PvP for me, but not griefing. :)

Personally I find the captain quite a dull character so would stick with others. I'm always someone who wants to be fighting rather than supporting. The Captain seemed(didn't play that long) to have so few attacks it was just dull, so didnt' really suit what I like. Even the Minstrel gets far more attacks, although not melee, and was a far more "active" class to play in terms of combat or healing.

Champion aswell you get a lot of attacks though IIRC you need to build up fevour for lots of them, they are great for damage once you get further into the game and can outlast several attackers, though early on I seem to recall it being very frustrating due to not great single target damage so its a fairly slow going class to start. Once you get armour and weapons that you can take 3 guys down at a time it becomes a fun to play quick combat class, till then I hate it.

Hunter, probably one of the most level characters from early on, trap one, nuke 1/2 others, and goes on similarly throughout the game.

AS for crafting, it does suck, the gap between level 50 and level 60 tier crafting stuff is minimal at best on stats, at least for a hunter, where mostly my stats are getting evened out rather than improved with the top tier stuff. The stuff from raiding is quite a lot better yet I don't like raiding so is really out of reach. THough apparently is very easy to get if you do, you can get whole sets far faster than the level 50 raiding sets, which makes the crafting stuff being so tedius to make aswell as not very good completely and utterly pointless.

It would maybe not be as bad if you could just try and crit items as the previous tier top quality stuff, but I've yet to pick up even one single use recipe for the top tier stuff playing throughout the entire moria levels and doing weapon grinding. I've yet to get any second age drops let alone a hunter one, and even then, let alone one I actually want to use. yes weapon legendaries are very good, makes one thing less tedius, and armour is easier to get IF you want to raid. But crafting was pooped completely, and drop rates of both recipes and second/first age weapons are a joke.

There is PvMP where you can play a pre-rolled Monster character against the normal characters on the other side. Its not great but it keeps some folks happy.

Definately don't come to Lotro looking for PVP though.

BTW, I didn't mean to equate PVP to griefing but I'm sure you know the type of immature player I'm talking about. This type of behaviour doesn't really happen in Lotro and there are some seriously honorable PVP raid leaders on both sides. A few I know will stop their raid ganking a single enemy mob who is willing to come out toe to toe with them. They much prefer to send people out and settle things one to one.

Obviously in open, rolling battles people will get seperated from their group and then they will get pounced upon by the group. You'll often see a lone enemy taunting some Freeps in a keep and one being sent out to give him some competition - these are golden PVP moments - but to be fair they are rare.

Yeah I don't class a lone player getting steamed by a group as griefing, that happens and it's partially the lone players fault, and well.. it just happens.

But I do consider it a lvl50 entering a lvl10 zone and killing all in sight even when they get no reward, like what happens in WoW. :)

So is there any RvR in LOTRO or is every character the "good guy" so to speak?

All PVE characters are heroes of the Free Peoples (hereafter known as Freeps). When you level past 40 you can go to a single PVP zone where open PVP takes place (flagged on entry). There are mostly rolling battles based on some repeatable quests and kind of 'Capture the Flag' sort of rules.

Your opponents are Monster classes (hereafter Creeps). You can select a pre-rolled but persistent Monster from early on (he'll enter the game at level 50), you get to name him but not much else really.

You can then choose to take your Freep or Creep to the PVP zone and lay waste all around.

There is no concept of faction or realm play here in Lotro - Monster play was put in to afford some PVP kicks to players interested in that but its nowhere near the integration of WoW for example where you choose a faction and level up and PVE while PVPing.

I hope thats a bit clearer - the PVP is fun but just about the lowest thing on the priority list for game development and since it isn't faction based, its hard to become attached to your Monster character.

Leodido, I've added you to my friends list on Laurelin, you're around the same level as my minstrel. Anyone else on Laurelin or wants to start there, pop your name in here and I'll add you.

Hey everyone

If after the trial, I decide to keep playing, do I have to download another client, or can I just keep playing with the trial client but with a full account? I already have an older account which hasn't been used for about 8 months and I feel like giving it another try again, but I really don't want to pay the monthly fee only to find I'm not fussed about playing it. I know I could install off the CD but there are a heck of a lot of patches available now and I don't fancy having to install each one separately.

Thanks for the help :)

I think you can keep using the trial client, doubt there's any difference as I think restrictions on in game things are probably account/server based rather than client - could be wrong though.

Patches are pretty huge, however if you do have to reinstall you can simply hit the "continue" button and go away and leave it overnight. Won't actually take all night but it means you're not waiting!

I recently reinstalled as I've got an elder account (won it - I'd never pay!) so I've been playing with my 33 Burglar. Oddly now own a level 10 guild as I'm the only member to have logged in for 400+ days!

If anyone wants to add me my character is "Kami" on Laurelin. Not that social at times though, tend to AFK loads so I'm more or less soloing most nights if I do play :) When I'm at the keyboard I rarely shut up though, you've been warned!

Cool thank you. I won't have a lot of time to play these days because I'll be moving in new flat but I'll get back sometimes!

I'll add Kami as well, what level ?

As stated above, if anyone needs a nice mature, casual, light RP (i.e. totally optional) Kin on Laurelin just let me know. Either drop me an email (in trust) or add Carathir as a friend in game.

At the very least its somewhere to hang your hat and another chat channel to spam with questions and banter.

We have lots of hardcore players and loads that logon once a week for a couple of hours with everything in between. Lots of level variation and to be honest most of the guys are very helpful at getting people levelled up or through a particularly tough segment of quests.

If anyone needs a hand, give me a shout.

I have an Elf Hunter called Dagless on Laurelin now, although I am still in the introductory stage (Level 4). Once I get a few more levels under my belt I will take a look at a Kin, as it will be handy to be able to get help from more experienced players.

Seems like a good community on LOTRO and I look forward to gaming with you all.
