Basically as the title suggests, i want to buy the ultimate gameing PC (or build one/have someone build it for me) im willing to spend around £2k to £2 and a half, would this be enough? any help on what to buy, where to buy ect as i have pretty much no idea lol. thx

what games would you be playing? Depending on games you want to play you could save a fair bit of money as a £1000 PC could play the majority of todays games fine.

Extra cash could then go to other things like nice monitors

A bit every so often is better than all at once.. Tech advances so fas that it would be far better spending sub £1000 , and updating it in a year , than spending stuff all at once....

Start off with a future proof motherboard, perhaps a i7 along with a nice quad core i7 processor..

add a case, some ram, a power supply, some nice hard drives, and a case and you're at about 700-800

from here you could spend about £250-£400 on a graphics card.. generally it's the graphics card that you want to update often, so say next year, if you feel the system is lacking, you could chuck a new one in ...

If you spend the whole £400 then you might not need to update for a good 2 years possibly, then with the remaining cash, after the 2 years update the processor, and graphics card..

That's really too much cash to be spending on tech that's obsolete in months, especially in this climate. There is an incredibly limited scope games that require such power. Almost all of them being first person shooters. 2k to play half a dozen FPS games?

1 to 1.5k is easily enough for a gamer PC, you can get away with less and have a good machine for games.
Of course if you're of the mind to blow all that cash you could do it on OC uk easily. :)

Im mostly into RPG types espically Oblivion. Ill be playing a lot of ME2:TW Sims 2 and 3 when it comes out, not too much on the shoot em up front, thats what my 360's for. i just want to be able to play the latest games on the highest settings and have really fast FPS.

FPSs are traditionally where the graphical requirements tend to be the highest. And the PC's what you should be playing 'em on tbh 'cos it has the best ones :)

For Sims 2 and 3 and ME2, you're not going to need the kind of horsepower that this budget will buy you. You'd be better off spending under a grand and saving the rest for something else.

If you genuinely have that amount to spend and want the ultimate gaming PC, for that money, get yourself and i7920, an X58 motherboard, some DDR3 triple channel, graphics, hard to say really, my advice if you have that cash to splash is tri SLI 285's, I'm an nvidia fanboy but that's a sick setup and will run anything for a good while to come. In reality, you should stick with the proposed spec. and get yourself one graphics card for now, that'll play near enough anything you want to, then wait for a couple of months before getting the latest tech. As someone said higher up, 2000 pounds is almost pointless to spend on a PC when the next stuff is always just a couple of months around the corner.

edit. Just saw your latest post, definately save the cash, spend a grand tops, that will play all RPG's for a good year or two to come I reckon, I'd advise quadcore though

Maxis has released information on the system requirements for "The Sims 2." If you have a T&L (info about what T&L is below) capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM (such as nvidia GeForce 2 or better or ATI Radeon 7000 or better) then you need at least:

* 800 MHz processor
* 256 MB RAM if Windows XP
* 128 MB RAM if Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows 2000
* At least 3.5 gigs of free hard drive space

If you have a non-T&L capable video card (such as TNT2, Intel, or Rage for example) then you need at least:

* 2.0 GHz processor
* 256 MB RAM if Windows XP
* 128 MB RAM if Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows 2000

be much much cheaper to build it yourself. if your spending that much money, you shouldn't be looking at anything else apart from an i7 setup.

Overclocking is simply getting more out the computer. it does have an effect on ife span on components. but nothing you need to worry about it would still be working in years to come.

Basically, if you're going to 'skimp' on anything, do it with the stuff that you'll be upgrading at some point. In other words, spend good money on a high quality PSU, case, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. They'll all last a good while longer than the CPU and graphics etc. IMO i7 is the way to go for that money, and you should maybe consider an SSD (120GB tops, 250GB is OTT for now, and even 120 is pushing it).

apart from the intels which cost 500 a pop, they all have random write issues.

either raid 0 some samsung f1 or get a veloceraptor. ssds are ill out the price range for this setup.

Nah not the Vertex for starters, you can get 60GB for a shade over £200.
