Whats the deal with these.. The ones issued a parking ticket issued from a private company, not from a proper traffic warden or plastic copper. For example, receiving one for parking in a supermarket car park for over the maximum stay they say.

Do private companies have a leg to stand on with these?

Thanks,
Andy

Its a civil matter, pay it or will just get handed to a debt collection agency who will whack another £150 worth of admin fees on it.

As [TW]Fox pointed out last time this was raised, unless they can prove it was you driving, they cannot do a thing as they rely on contract law to enforce (the contract between you and them when parking there). They also cannot legally compell you to say who was driving.

The good old 1689 Bill of Rights explicitly makes this behaviour illegal without a court order, specifically it states "That all grants and promises of fines and forfeitures of particular persons before conviction are illegal and void".

It's still on the statute books today what with it being one of the cornerstones of the British constitution.

Interesting.. Have just been reading up on it as well, going to write them a letter on Monday. Theres no way I'm paying £40 for staying 3hrs in a pretty much empty car park..

Already had one ticket on Monday for parking on double yellows which I paid, can't afford another this week!

Did you park in Waitrose? :p

Yep.. Typical car park out the back of our office was rammed by the other units and I'd just come back from a job so had no space, had to park in Waitrose..

Hows the new car going?
