Hi all, I am 16 and after a bit of advice. I started college part time in September doing a mechanic course. The reason I was doing a part time course is because I was working with my mum in her own business at the time. I have since decided that I don't want a career in mechanics so have stopped going to college till the New Year. (September 09) I am then going to start on a computer course I think. So I had been looking for work and then I saw a job in McDonalds. I took the job paying £4.35p/h. I am looking for further work because I can't stand working there and I could do far more.

I earn around £160-£180 every 2 weeks. You get payed every other Thursday. This is where my mum demands to have £100 every 2 weeks of that money so by the time I have payed my phone contract I am left with £20 to last 2 weeks. I don't mind paying her some money at all but do you all think this is a bit much? She isn't working at the moment because of a long term illness which makes matters worse but it feels like I am paying for us? I keep applying for jobs daily but don’t seem to be getting anywhere. I have had 2 close jobs that would have been brilliant for me. One was working for BMW motorcycles as an apprentice in mechanic. Was good money and had great prospects but I got to the last 2 people and they choose the other person because he didn't have dyslexia and he had done slightly better on a test than me. I then applied to work in a call centre for more than. It was good seemed to go really well but just got a letter saying I didn't get the job.

I don't really want to continue working at McDonalds they don't treat you with much respect what so ever. I am going to go into full time college in September unless I can find another job that would be a better choice. I have recently applied for a job with BT to become a BT engineer apprentice. I am getting to the point where I am thinking of quitting McDonalds and just being unemployed till I find something else. I don’t really know what to-do so any suggestions would be great.

Anyway thanks for reading all of that.

Cheers Phil

No, don't quit until you have something else lined up..

Are you getting interviews, your CV and covering letter might need sorting out.

I can post my CV to see what you think? I am getting some interviews but not as many as I would like.

What about the likes of morrisons that pay time and a half every sunday(or used to??)

Also what about trying some agency work? Often get a minimum of 5/6£ PH.

You could also google matched betting if your willing to give that a shot, or daily clicks - some people spend 2-3hours a day doing this and earn £300 a month, or at least so they say...

If thats true than thats ~£4PH but with no tax/Ni etc is probably roughly what you are on the now...

Its often hard to find a decent job when you are young as you will have little experience and qualifications. You just need to keep applying. As above i wouldnt quit without having another job. The money you are earning is helping you and your mum.

Worst thing you can do is quit, atleast when you go to an interview and they ask why you intend to leave yourcurrent job you can tell them why..

Get a CV sorted and poste dup on this forum, these guys will rip it apart and help u make it perfect, they have done so on many occasions for me..

As for the board you pay to your mother, that cant be help, if thats what she wants then thats what she wants, we have all been at the bottom at one point, how do you intend to pay for your contract if you dont have a job? Dont quit, keep yur head down and crack on.

Deffo go back to college, dont waste your life in a tradeless, endless job. Get a trade behind you, look for your local apprenticeship schemes.

Thats my advice anyway.

James.

Dont quit until you find something else.

You wont get much respect as a BT apprentice either, but my friend was an engineer for a while there and he said he enjoyed it, just didnt like the people.

just didnt like the people.

Which youll get in every job so dont leave because of that if thats why your leaving McDons..

I got turned down for McDons back when i was young, im seeing it as fate now as im now an Apprentice Engineer, 2 wage rises a year, a bonmus ion april, a bonus at xmas and 2 bottles of wine plus holidays, free education for 3 yearrs and then a chance at Uni, cant be better :)

&

I work at the Coop part time for a bit extra :) It looks crap now for you dude, but itll turn around, you just have to work yourself to your limits, i do every day of my life, and i wil do untill im the best that i can be in my trade. Nothing in life comes easy, you really have to graft if you want to get anwyay, and lazyness will be spotted and wont be liked by your fellow workers.

When i tried t get work at mcdons, i had bills mounting, i was low on job experience til i found a job in a hotel that paid okayish but were very good at giving overtime and extra days etc etc, i loved the place and when i left they asked me to stay and offered accomodation and a wage rise.. Just get your head down and crack on untill something better comes along.

Dont leave just because you dont like it because i can probably guarantee atleats half of this forum will have done jobs they dont like, and most will be in jobs they hate :p

Aww I actually feel sorry for this kid :( , 100 quid a fortnight to your mother is pretty steep actually considering how young you are and how little you are earning.

I hope you get on track mate. Ive had a strange run of careers in my life this far. joining the RAF myself to give me a bit of stability

It's not that at McDonalds, But there is no set hours one week I could work 30 hours the next just one shift. I shall continue to stay there. If I post my cv up would be helpful if you can suggest anything. I did it on one of those websites cost about a tenner but her goes.

Change Mcdonalds to:

• Mcdonald's Oct-Present

I like your CV, its better than mine, where are you from?

If i were you id go onto the LSC website and look into Engineering.. Find your local apprenticeship scheme and get in touch with them..

oh yeah I had already done that.

Look at a GCSE Resit for english if you can, and have the time to do an evening course, ive found employers always want a C in that..

Luckily enough my current employer wanted to see me in person to talk about my application through my learning provider

I have been looking at retaking that, I was so gutted when I got a D. I had been going to extra classes and my mums friend who is a teacher had even given me some lessons. I was 1 mark away from a C :S But I am going to retake between now and september.

Challenge them, u can challenge any grade u gain, get a remark. You start a dispute or something, speak to your previous school who can help you with this. Dont let them talk you out of it either, get it done, worth a shot you dont loose anything from doing this.

£100 board is steep, i pay £40 a week and thats because i raised that myself from £35 due to my mum been a single parent, which went up from £30 about a year ago when she was hit with higher counsil tax for me moving in which i now fund.

What about the likes of morrisons that pay time and a half every sunday(or used to???

They do, i used to work there and I have mates that do but the pay is still only around £4.10 for a 16 year old, the reason I left the job.

Tescos is a better choice, were i work, I get around £5.80 an hour, time & a half on a sunday and 10% off after working there 6 months.

I hate the company in terms of ethics, but I have to work else I can't afford a bus pass to get to college and back on. My only advice is try and get a job which isn't based around the customers, the customer thinks they're right, but they don't work in the shop, so most of the time they aren't.

Wherever you work, with no qualifications, especially at 16, the pays gonna be bad and so is the work.

Or B, talk to her and say that you only earn X, and are paying Y, leaving you with what was it £20?

What about something more around 20-25pc of what you earn, see what she says to that.

So say you earn £100PW average, thats £20-25 to her PW, or half of what you used to pay give or take.

You then SAVE some for going away to colledge/uni, and actually have some money to spend on yourself for a change as well.

That along with getting a better job, but rather than trying this apprentice thing, get a more permanent job to see you through college, even if its just weekends say like in a supermarket that pays better than Mcd's. You can still work a couple of shifts at mcd's through the week until you leave, and you could keep the weekend job through college.
