Scores die in Israeli air strikes

For a start, Britain shares responsibility for the creation of the state of Israel.

How long is the guilt of that millstone meant to hang around our necks? For 60 years Israel has been her own nation, I think she can take responsibility for her own actions.

I think it is still recent enough history for us to still take some responsibility. We have a US-backed significant military power, Israel, with a vast array of nukes, tanks and jets, versus the Palestinians. It is not a fair fight.

Most fights aren't. Hopefully any wars we get in to wouldn't be either.

Fair fight? Oh please...... How many fights have you seen that have been fair, let alone wars?

Besides, if they were completely equal, millions of people would die as they'd be fighting forever.

The Palestinians, despite what the media would have you believe, are not completely innocent in all this.

Even remotely equal would be a start. In WW2 both sides had a professional military force with powerful weaponry.

Israel vs the Palestinians is no contest is it?

I guess the Germans shouldn't have slaughtered those millions of half trained Russians since, you know, that wasn't fair either.

Wars are only equal if one or more sides screwed up.

How long til it kicks off again?
The fragile ceasefire in Gaza appeared to be crumbling today as Palestinian militants set off a bomb beside an Israeli patrol on the Gaza border, reportedly killing one soldier.

Palestinian officials also said that Israeli troops afterwards shot and killed a 27-year-old man and wounded two others near the tense border, across which Israeli tanks and troops swarmed this month in a ground invasion of the Hamas-controlled enclave.

The violence came after the end of a week-long ceasefire unilaterally declared by Israel to end three weeks of fighting that left 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis dead.

The Israeli military would not comment on Arabic news reports that a soldier was killed but confirmed that a blast targeted a patrol near Kissufim, one of the border crossing it controls.

No Palestinian militant group took responsibility for the attack, the most serious breach of the truce that both sides are trying to firm up in Egyptian-brokered talks in Cairo. Hamas has said it could agree to a year-long ceasefire if Israel ends it 18-month closure of the Gaza crossings. Israel officials have warned of more Palestinian attacks before any longer-term ceasefire is agreed upon.

Following the attack, Palestinians living close to the area said heavy shooting could be heard and reported seeing Israeli attack helicopters hovering in the air. Shortly afterwards, an Israel warplane flew over the strip causing a sonic boom, apparently in warning to the population.

Israel ended its blistering air and ground assault on January 17 with a unilateral ceasefire that was followed by similar announcement from Palestinian militants. However, Hamas has proved in the past to be unable, or unwilling, to completely rein in more extreme groups who have continued to fire at Israeli forces.

And an Israeli gunboat opened fire on the Gaza Strip after the tentative truce came into effect, wounding two girls, while some gunfire has been reported along the border, which Palestinian officials said killed two men they identified as farmers.

Today’s attack was the most serious escalation since the end of hostilities, although the war of words has continued. Two of the leading candidates for next month’s Israeli elections, Tzipi Livni, the foreign minister, and Binyamin Netanyahu, the opposition leader, said toppling Hamas was a strategic goal for them

What a bizarre idea, you seem to be suggesting that it is desirable to fight wars between approximately equal sides. That's one sure fire way to generate massive casualties.

For as long as it takes to stop supporting a nation that can pin point a moving car with a laser guided bomb, yet still chooses to deliberately slaughter civillians with indiscriminate use of cluster and phosphorous bombs. People are still dying in Lebanon from unexploded bombs from Israel's use of collective punishment to appease a bloodthirsty electorate and whilst the government supports that there will be a feeling of guilt.
