Last week I got a cheap eos300 to get me started with photography. I then ordered a canon fd 50mm 1:1.8 prime lense to go with it, yet when it turned up this morning it wont fit onto the camera. Am I just being a complete noob and got an incompatable lense or am I being an equal noob and just not getting it to connect properly? also the aperture in the lense doesnt seem to move when turning the ring, have I just wasted 20 odd quid on a dud lense?

You've bought a lens with the old Canon FD mount, the EOS cameras only take EF lenses. So yes, to answer your question you're being a complete noob, although you haven't wasted £20, you could get an old Canon AE-1 film camera to whack that 50mm on.

FD lenses will not fit on any EOS camera, nor can they be adapted to do so. You need a canon EF fit lens. (FD is a breechmount lens, whereas EF is a bayonet fit)

Best suggestion is to resell the lens, then try to find an EF 50mm f1.8, cant generally miss these as they are a lot more expensive, when compared with the FD lens. (about £50+)

great, cheers for clearing that up for me. i probably should have looked into it a bit more before buying. oh well, no harm done suppose.

It was a 20 odd year old canon 50mm prime lens. I got my Olympus 50mm f1.8 for £5, which i use on my eos 20D.

Its the middle one.

it's a quality lens that is very similar to the other lenses in that image. I also have the 24 and 28 f2.8 aswell and they are also exceptional. I love their size most of all, and of course the image quality is almost as good as my zeiss lenses. The 16-9 tests of the top three 24mm lenses around rated the olympus 24 f2.8 as being a close 2nd to the canon 24 f1.4

Sadly though i am selling almost all of my manual gear soon, since i have moved to nikon, though i still use my 20D at present as i cant afford a replacement.

i'd be interested in buying some of your Olympus Lenses when you sell 'em
