The Phenom II look's sweet and doesn't break the bank either. Could be my first Quad core and AMD. Shall I buy my first AMD?

Same, I really don't understand all the excitement about the new phenom. Highest stable clock I've seen was 4.25ghz and that was under phase!

Personally, I'd rather have a Yorkfield or even a good stepping Q6600

Isn't a Q6600 and MB cheaper and faster and more overclockable than a Phenom II and AMD MB combo?
I thought Phenoms only made sense if you already have a AMD MB.

I would have to agree. I was an AMD fan boy. Used the X2 4200 , X2 6000 and tried the Phenom 1 9500. It was buggy on the first release with the TLB error. I took a chance and went Intel. Q6600 and Nvidia 680i chipset. Completely destroyed the AMD's i have used in the past. I managed 3ghz from my Q6600 on that board.
I now have a Q9550 @ 3.8ghz on a Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45. Excellent performance. Phenom's just do not keep up.

But it is your choice. Choose wisely.

It's cheaper, it's a fair bit slower at stock and it doesn't overclock further than the phenom II. The AMD mobo's give you more features for less money on average.
There's no particular reason to choose a phenom II over a Core 2 Quad but there's no particular reason not to, so you might as well say why buy a core 2 quad ? Either are good choices. The AM2+ has a longer future of releases ahead of it with the AM3's being backwards compatible. Of course how much longer no one knows.

Had some processors from both companies in the past and l am pleased AMD user but for the moment i am using an Intel CPU. While l have a quad for multimedia work, if l was shopping for a system now and l was on a budget l would strongly consider the Phenom II which is generally a good chip for the price.
If money was not an issue l would certainly go for the i7 though. Anyway either CPU you decide to buy will perform quite well.

I recond if you have the spare cash just go i7 if looking for budget then phemon II, its known that the i7 will definately beat the phenom IIs though.

It really depends on how much you want to spend. Both Intel and AMD quads are excellent choices, with Intel you get a better chip, but the mobo prices are extreme whereas AMD maybe not quite as fast, but overall mobo + CPU price is very good. I dont think you can lose either way...
Im due an upgrade this year, I have a dual P4 830D  and although Id like a i7, in reality, I will be going for a AM3 Phenom and an AM3 CPU board
Mind you, if the i7 920 drops in price, then i will go for that...

One thing I would say though is that the first AM3 mobo's are starting to appear, so I would go with one of them.

I am starting to agree those AMD might well be the budget choice, especially as socket 775 is at the end of its life time (few new cpus will be released if any)

Well i've gone and bought the 940, should be arriving shortly! It's going to replace my 5000 black edition @ 3.0ghz. I thought since I was upgrading my case i may aswell !! :P

Socket 775 may not be the newest socket but its not near the end of its lifeline as yet (Note: E8700 being released soon).

If you already have an AM2+ motherboard, then AMD Phenom II all the way, otherwise it depends on your tastes. I prefer Intel myself (Try mixing AMD vs Intel CPUs in Red Alert you sometime get an Out of Sync error, it's true, they do some things differently) also Intel Core 2s (45nm) do have the edge over Phenom IIs from what I here, but its all down to personal preference.

saw a vid the other day with one running at 6.4/6.5ghz under liquid helium iirc (-242c or there abouts), think it attained the world record for 3dmark05, around the 45400 ish mark.

Lots of Intel fans sprouting crap in here, as usual.

Go and do some research about *properly overclocking the Phenom II and how it really performs i.e. comfortably as quick as the Q6600, and often faster, add to that fact the average overclock on air is 4GHz with plenty seeing higher (taken from another forum).

*hint NB clocks, not just multiplier.
