Anybody know the history of lolcats?

To me rathergood.com was the original, and even though Ive been blanking on the name of it for months when describing it to poeple, nobody has any idea what I was talking.

rathergood was soo succesful that there was even a robertson fruit juice advert done in the same style.

so...uhm....*crap needs a point to this post*....

lolcats(icanhazcheezburger) or rathergood?

Rathergood.com was great back in the day, I remember first seeing crabbloke, and spoooooooooooooooooonnnnnggggggaaaaaaaaaarrrrdddddddd!!!!!!

The Wiki article is about right.

Started on somethingawful.com with the original Happycat picture posted in 2003 (and apparently taken from happycat.ru, a Russian cat food company website) which later acquired the caption "oh god how did this get here, I am not good with computer" (the "I can haz cheezburger" variant didn't turn up until years later), 4chan picked up on it at some point afterwards (usually said to be 2005) and ran with it with the "caturday" event on their /b/ board (warning, /b/ is very much NWS, I suggest not googling it or going there if there's a chance anyone can see you), applying ironic internet bad spellings such as "liek" and "moar" and so on. Most of the early stuff on icanhascheezburger.com (and other lolcat sites) is blatantly stolen from 4chan, but of course their members have run with it (some might say they've run it into the ground) made the spelling even worse and now call it lolspeak.

rathergood.com and it's singing kittens aren't really much to do with the whole lolcat thing. Also rathergood.com was better when it was just doing flash animations. The kittens ruined it IMO.

NEDM was a separate meme from YTMND. They started using HappyCat later. the YTMND wiki and encyclopedia dramatica have perfectly good explanations for NEDM

Edit: encyclopedia dramatica also has the most accurate explanation of Happycat too.

I think it started out with that "I'm in ur fridge eating your foodz" pic, which was a parody of "I'm in ur base, killing your dudes..."

Correct me if I'm wrong...

never heard of rathergood.com but it looks terrible. sounds like it was once popular but has since let itself go and lost out to competition
Not competition. Joel sold out. His "I like the moon" song became the theme for Quizno's restaurant here in the U.S. and he must have made a mint off it. He still puts new material on the site once in awhile, but he hasn't touched the layout of it since it's inception.

Go Joel!

Oh, and his cats doing "Immigrant Song" was my favourite. :)
