Anyone been to Thailand?

Stay away from Pattaya, All Thai people i've spoken to all say it is a horrible place to go.

Definitely go to the north of Thailand in the National Parks.

According to the site I was reading last night, February is a good month to go - very little rain and an average temperature of 33.

Yay! I'm all excited! Eight days to go!

aye, its dry season at the moment

I went to Bangkok septemeber 06 and it was very hot but overcast and raining all the time along with thunder & lightning

I didn't mind it too much but it was uncomfortable being so sticky all the time

WHile you are there buy talcum powder and apply it liberally. February was my first trip there and it was very humid for me, even though I'd been living in Singapore for two months by that point.

I'm hoping that within a couple days I'll revert to my African upbringing and be able to handle the heat. Either that or fade away into nothingness (whch would take some doing!).

I didn't revert to my African upbringing but good luck to you!

i have just come back from one month in thailand...

spent most of it on koh phangan which is famous for the full moon parties but if you travel out of haad rin where the parties are there is a whole island to explore.

an hour away by boat is koh samui and koh tao.. samui is much bigger and more touristy and koh tao is much smaller, and is famous for learning to scuba dive.

also worth a few days in bangkok and go up north if you can too.

as for going on your own, dont worry, its a great experience and you will meet loads of people.

cost depends on how you want to live and how much y ou want to spend. you can do it on the cheap if you want or spend out for lavish accomodation/travel/food/drink if you want.

its one of those places that you can go too and once you get there you will work out where to go and what to do by speaking to people but its very easy with a nice system in place for travellers.

ive only been back a few days and i miss it so much :(

have fun...

The poor thai people... hopefully the credit crunch will help to keep them at bay!

Threads like this make me glum because it's about 6 months before I'll be back in thailand :(

Thailand is great, there's a lot more to the country than seedy sex shows. There's loads to see and do in Bangkok, Temples, restaurants, markets and some very classy bars (I wish I could remember the name of one I went to at the top of one of the tallest buildings, sofas on the terrace, great drinks and fantastic views over the city, but not cheap).
Chiang Mai is also well worth going to, there's lots of day trips you can do, including trips to the Mekong river and jaunts across the border into Laos.

kanchanaburi is a nice quiet getaway for a few days
phi phi is developed, but still heaven, lots to do and see, quiet beach bars on the othe sides of the island, diving is ace
koh samui is quite big in comparison to other islands, loads to do, rent a moped and see it that way - make sure you visit Soi Green Mango one night
Koh Pangnan is great, moon parties are awesome (apart from half moon party, it's an organised rave up in the middle of the island, all a bit rubbish)
Koh Tao is beautiful, not very developed, diving is great

Which is why I'm going, but every time you tell someone, you get comments like this:

if going to thailand you have two options
young boys
or
lady boys.
....which are really helpful. It's even funnier the fifth time you hear it in a day!

if you goto a show,

make sure you leave before they bring the alsatian on
This made me laugh in L4D last night. Even better was Sharpy's, "Yeah, you were fine with the horse, but the moment an alsation got involved, you left!".

There has, however, been some useful info in this thread and even some helpful emails. So I'm glad the OP made the thread - and by the way, if you're on your tod and fancy a beer, I'll be in Bangkok from the 1st until the 5th, I think, so email in trust before I leave (Saturday - but put OcUK in the subject line) and I'll give you some contact details for me while I'm over there.

Probably either the Vertigo Restaurant at the Banyan Tree or Sirocco at Lebua at State Tower

Sirocco

Vertigo

There is also a viewing platform at the Baiyoke Tower with a Bar, but no restaurant. The view is great, but the building itself is a bit cruddy at the very top to be honest, and the view is obscured slightly by a wire mesh which I assume is there to stop people making a bid for freedom.
