Ok so after the other thread it seems some people might interest in this little project of ours!

The Plan
The plan is to get this Van MOT'd asap and convert it into a Camper van, to compete in the student breakaway ended up in Budapest!

We decided that we wanted to do the rally in a Transit as we could sleep in the back off it so we didnt / wouldnt have to set up a tent every night! lol

So the first idea was to buy one already MOT'd, but it was looking expensive for a decent one! so i got asking around and it turned out that my boss had one in his field! it had been there for 2 years and had not moved. he handed me the keys and said if i can get it out the field i can have it :D result!!

The Van
Its a 1995 Semi high top Long wheel Base 2.5 ford transit! supposed to be white, but at the moment its more green than white lol

Starting the Van
So after a few days of thinking, we decided that it would be an idea so see if the thing would run! Fresh oil, fresh fuel, and a new battery - turn the key and it started first time!!! Very very surprised and very happy!

Getting it out the field!
Last sunday we decided would be a good day to start the mission of getting it out the field!! It has been raining for the last 3 days so the field was slightly damp to say the least!

Its been sitting on a concrete pad for years so the idea was to drive it forward and reverse straight back over the lump you see in the pic, this pic was after this was tried! thats as far as it went! so then came the task of pulling it out with a winch! that was only 2 meters long :p it had to be winched to the gate there in the picture. so you can imagine not the easiest job in the world.

Winched for a while and added wood and hey under the wheels at it started moving! then got stuck! and just span the wheels.

We then noticed the large amount of fuel spilling out! so stopped pulling the van and fixed that problem!

Moved abit further!

5 hours later and we got it out the gate!!

Whats Next?
So since last sunday we have emptied the inside out! to which we found a large box of Porn! Plenty of dead fly's! Lots and Lots of MDF / Ply wood / other wood! (ideal for building the install into the back of it )

To Do List!
  • Rear Doors need welding / Replacing
  • Duck Tap over over rust holes! or fill them!
  • Full Service!
  • MOT
  • CLEAN!!!
  • Ply Line it all + Insolation!
  • Install Camper type interior
  • Paint the Outside in some funky design!
  • HAVE FUN!

So with all this to do! and only 6 months to do it! we need to get shifting! the MOT is booked in for next week so we should then know how much its going to cost us to put it all right! we have any idea of what needs doing but will know more soon!!

any questions please ask!

i will get more pics of the beast over the next few days! to show all the rust spots and a general over view on the van!

Getting stuck in fields is a swine, happens fairly frequently at work.

Last time I had to be pulled out by a JCB :o

Looks in OK shape considering its just sat in a field.

As for rather than pitching a tent, how many of you are going in it? If its more than two then it will be cosy in the back!

Looks like you're going to have an awful lot of fun with that van - I'm rather envious of your escapades.

Keep us updated!!

What needs doing for the MOT prep, anything more in-depth than making sure the tyres are legal, the bulbs work and the wipers aren't shot?

Any welding required? What about the exhaust system?

Sounds like a cool project, I really should write up my log of getting my 325 back on the road, and ready for a trip to the 'ring.

well we are thinking that the exhaust is shot. some welding is what we are expecting! more will be reviled tomo! we are starting nice and early to get a full day in!

and i need to fit a new alternator and cv boot to my mini to :(

Much fun as projects are, you can buy a fully mot'd transit camper for less than 2k use it, and sell it on again and loose less money that this is going to cost to get it running, Mot'd, fitted out and ready to go.

we aint gonig to spend anything close to 2k. if we had 2k to spend we would have bought one!! lol

we already have most of the bits to go in it! the guy who had it before was goign to be making it into a camper, so has all the wood in the back already. all we need to do is install it :D

but instead we

a) get it for free
b) Spend upto £500 getting it ready
c) sell it for profit

Cost of Vehicle - £-500

plus its more fun this way than just buying one already done!! dont you think??

His point is that:

a) Buy Camper Transit for £2000
b) Drive it around Europe
c) Sell Camper Transit for £2000

Cost of vehicle - £0

Yes, but that still means you need to source the initial capital for the vehicle.

haha, yea thats something we got thinking about, its all gunna be abit cosy with 2 of us! so individual sleeping bags it is lol

hahaha
it's not actually that bad, i just somehow thought it was much worse when I 1st typed.
Basically i hate using other poeple's tiolets or public tiolets for anything other than pee-ing, and it can get pretty bad at times. Also hate the idea of poeple hearing me, so kinda dont like going when we have poeple in the house etc.
