Landrovers - the new quad?

I'd disagree there, if things like an MX-5 are insurable then there are fun cars available. MX-5's are excellent cars and will be joyous in the summer with the roof down. I assumed we were talking rubbish like 306's etc.

I haven't checked the insurance for MX-5s, but there not really practical enough for what I need anyway, I could do with somewhere to put my bike and stuff.

As with all cars, you can buy decent examples and crap ones for £2k, most being crap, insurance-wise you are looking at group 11-12 which for a new/young driver is not going to be all that good, granted it won't be hugely bad.

I just don't get how a slow walloy 4X4 that can't corner is going to be fun. Yes off road it could be great if you spent some on it to make it a proper off road weapon, but not when it's used on road in either road or off road form.

As I said earlier, I like them, but wouldn't choose to have one because they are 'fun' as they simply aren't. :)

I understand you don't agree with me, and I'm not trying to make you agree with me. But I'm not aware of any cars that are really that fun for road use for the price anyway. Sure there might some hot hatches which would be okay for track days, but track days don't really appeal to me. So with that in mind, the on road part of the car will just be for travelling around, so as long as it is practical and drivable it doesn't really matter. Then the off road part will just make it really fun off road. I'm not trying to claim it's going to be fun to drive on road.

106 XSi? 106 GTi? Saxo VTR? Fiesta Zetec? Small chuckable hatches.

But to me, all of the above are really mundane. I also doubt you'd fit a full size mountain bike in the boot of any of them too.

This depends on the level of insurance he is implying wtt the landrover. He mentions "small hatchback" which i would assume to refer to the performance as well as the physical size. All of the above will be more expensive and therefore above the implied amount.

If not, yeah. But this argument surely only exists because of the insurance matching only utter dross?

But you've never driven any of them. How can you possibly call them mundane and if we're talking about looks how on earth does a landrover look any better it was hardly built in that respect.

I'm not talking about the driving so much (although I can't imagine they'd be that spectacular), just the general image, looks, etc. of all of those is mundane, and boring. You see those kind of cars everyday. Usually with **** driving them as well.

:/

Ignoring that hot hatches are brilliant on the road and don't need to be tracked.

OK, look at it like this...

Hothatch. Quick on road and brilliant fun to drive, decent handling, quick acceleration upto 100mphish.
Most use of this vehicle will be on road, but can be tracked, and can be improved for the track, making it not so sensible for the road.

Landy. Slow, lardy, crap handling, naff all acceleration upto...well anything.
Most use of this vehicle will be on road, but can be taken off road and can be improved for off road use making it even more useless on the road.

The fact that the hothatch can be taken on the track is the same as the Landy being taken off road, it can be done, but doesn't need to be and in all likelihood both will only be used on road anyway.

Well the reason I wouldn't take it too track days is because it'd just be too expensive for a decent amount of time. Whilst it hardly costs anything to just go green laning, providing you don't damage anything.

I live in a city, so I can't see where I'd get the chance to use any of the hot hatches acceleration or better cornering ability, I'll spend most of my on road time stuck in traffic jams and on slow moving streets. So it won't make much difference.

I'd have thought the quotes would come out similar, although the 106GTi is group 13 with the Land Rovers being 11-12. Also there is the whole hothatch increasing premiums for young drivers, so the Land Rover could work out cheaper.

I see Landys etc. everyday, and at the moment I'm NOT living in the middle of nowhere.

So why bother with the Land Rover, as you won't use it outside of the city. :/

But you probably see about 2 maybe 3 at most, I see literally 20-30 ford fiestas a day, probably more.

Plus a saxo isnt really any different to the untrained eye than a 106 or an old fiesta, there just hatchbacks.

Land Rovers are quite unique.

I would, because I'd go out of the city to use it, so if I'm going out the city then I'd rather go out the city to go off roading than tear around some b roads in a hot hatch.
