Come on then, the 55nm 260's are they any good ?

I have been interested in the 55nm parts since Nvidia said that the first run of 280's and 260 where rushed to counter ATI's and the 55nm parts would be much better and come into production soon after.

So are they better than the first generation 260's

Still haven't installed mine yet, had it since release day (eVGA SSC version) but i've become a lazy sod recently when it comes to installing new parts (Abit IP35 Pro sitting since summertime!). Will let you know when I finally get around to it. Going to change case 1st though, so likely another week at least.

They are not really much of an improvement over the original from the reviews i have read. That being said the gtx260 216 65nm is a fine card and overclocks really well. At launch the gtx260198/280 had there problems but as time went on they matured into good cards. Price was the main problem at release with the 260/280 when compared with the 4870. Gtx280 had heat problems which were all fixed after a month or 2. The gtx260 216 on 65nm is still as good a card as the 55nm pretty much.

Wow, that's helped OP out.

Anyway, they have an inferior cooler to the 65nm 260, early tests showed they didn't overclock any better and in some cases used more power. Having said that, they are priced pretty reasonably - personally would have snapped up one of the GTX 280s recently flogged if you were in that price range.

They look like they're just a cheaper version of the 65nm. I owned a 65nm GTX260 and unfortunately it was faulty but I didn't want to replace it with a 55nm GTX260, so I bought a 65nm GTX280 instead.

I was toying with getting a £218 280gtx myself but the pick and mix style sale plus the last minute price increase made me think again.
I cant understand why a couldn't pay a little more or a little less and have a choice, but maybe that's just to sensible for today's "lets think out side of the box" proactive marketing people.

I have read quite a few reviews but the results seem very inconstant for what should be a great card.

Diggsy, please let me know how you get on. 55nm owner's seem to be a very shy bunch and i have a feeling these cards will be front line fodder for the inevitable price war.

I wish the new cards would be more powerfull then the last.
But at the same time use less power. If things keep going the way they have been. We will all need very powerfull PSU + some way in getting all that heat out of our cases.

That's one of the mains reasons why I bought it. :) The excitement of not knowing what will arrive. :p

Will do. In fact I might even run a few benches then install it in my current setup to see how it fares. Hmmm, i'll see if I get time over the next few days to do just that.

I have read that the new 55nm 260 GTX's are a 'failed' B2 stepping that was meant to become the new GTX 285's and didn't make the grade. They redid the GTX 285's as the B3 stepping which actually saved some power and heat rather than end up just the same.

It would make sense if true because the 55nm 260's are no improvement to the 65nm at all. They use about the same amount of power as the 65nm models at idle and can even use more under load, they also run a tad hotter thanks to the smaller heatsink.

Basically they're nothing to get excited over :)
