January Transfer Window Thread - rumours and signings here

Blatantly Gomes. He's a fantastic keeper when he's fit. Unfortunately he's already had two bad injuries since joining Spurs. :(

Cudicini to Spurs is now official. Free transfer.

great signing, now all that needs to happen is Man City don't want Shay Given:)

Toon news looks like we are actually maybe possibly might sign someone

NUFC BLOG

Albin Ebondo is on Tyneside today to undergo a medical and agree terms with a fee of £3.5M having been agreed with his club Toulouse, for the 24 year old 5′11″ French right back.

News today that a 3M fee for Scotland and Celtic center-back Stephen McManus would in all likelihood be accepted by the Scottish club, since the 26 year-old Celtic captain now wants to leave Scotland. Stephen, who is 6′2″ tall has played for Celtic 131 times (20 goals) and for Scotland 17 times (one goal).

The Newcastle Journal is reporting that we are still in negotiations for Stephane Mbia from Rennes, and they indicate the two clubs are getting closer on an agreement for the 22 years old 6′2″ central midfielder, who has been compared to Patrick Vierra. The lad has played for Rennes 92 times (6 goals) and for Cameroon 12 times (3 goals).

The 20-year-old HJK Helsinki defender, Jukka Raitala, who is 5′11″ tall, very physical in his play and can play anywhere along the back four, has finished his trial on Tyneside last week, along with a number of other players, and we would expect something in the next couple of days on who we will sign - if anybody.

Raitala would seem to be a great acquisition for us at just £450K, and he will only get better. We had thought Jukka was the defender Joe was talking about signing last week, but that turned out to be the Cameroon International, Ebondo.

We could still lose Shay Given to Manchester City with the Eastlands club expected to launch their 3rd bid for Given. Apparently the first two were for £3M and £5M, depending on who you believe, so a bid closer to £10M could do the deal. But we still think Joe wants to keep Shay if he possibly can - after all he’s Irish. :D.

We would hope to get 20 year-old Michael Johnson and 22 year-old Nedum Onouha in part exchange, but it looks like both players do not want to move permanently right now, and loan deals could be worked out, for at least one of them.

There’s a report in the Daily Mirror that Portsmouth will now bid £4M for Joey Barton, but haven’t Joey and Kinnear already made it clear the 26 year old is going nowhere?

And in fact Barton could be Newcastle’s key player in the run-in to the season - as he seems keen and determined to repay Newcastle United back for the way they have stood by him over the last 18 months, when many a club would have just kicked him out.

More news yesterday from Charlie boy, and this time he bad mouths Newcastle United. We did not report the story. We would advise N’Zogbia not to bite the hand that feeds him, and to stop his immature antics to leave Newcastle. That’s as polite we can be about this young Frenchman - who is getting on our nerves.

A fantastic keeper? No, he's a shot stopper, a very good one, but in all other area's he's a liability.

That's the view that the British media have spun but it's untrue. The British press love a good cliche and will try their hardest to pigeon-hole players for life based on first impressions.

Before he did his hamstring, Gomes had been playing very well. His decision making has vastly improved and he's always had a good throw on him. The only part of his game that is poor is his kicking.

But what do I know? I only see him play in the flesh every week.

He has, he played there a few times earlier in his career. Though I think it's more likely he'd get Fabio to play LW and Evra LWB..

Evra has played on the wing for Utd? If you say so although I dont recall that (I did specify not at Utd, so Im not sure which you where meaning)

Anderson is only 20 but he's played something like 60-70 games for us now, but I think he's an exception. Saying that, Rafael has played lots.

spot on - 63 appearances for Utd, but bare in mind he came from a pretty decent club in Europe and is two years older than Da Silva's (45ish apps last season) - and Fergie is usually a little cautious with the youngsters so 20 games a season seems about right for 1st one or two seasons. Of course both of the twins may mature fast enough to become 1st choice very quickly :D

Reminded me more of Nani, doesn't seem to dribble in and out of people like Giggs in his hay-day, but he seemed even more lightweight than Nani, however, it was nice to see him covering at LB and always moving, he could be good. Need to get him on the Patrice Evra diet though :p..

Certainly needs the PE diet without a doubt

Second season syndrome? He was garbage in the first too :p. Sadly, I was proved right with Nani, but I guess you gotta take a chance, and he's entertained the fans with those goals against Spurs, Middlesbrough, Liverpool and Derby..

I think his first season was comparable to CR's (although admittedly Nani was older) but he has imo gone backwards this season, worth a punt but I doubt he will last much longer at Utd

Never personally seen what Valencia offers, he seems to be one of those whose career started brightly, but it was proved he wasn't that good in the end. The way we play allows players like Rooney and Tevez to rotate with a wide-player, so I don't think it's that important, we're never struggling for men out wide - many teams would kill for our wide options, most noteably Liverpool.

Fair enough - I personally think that while Rooney and Tevez to a lesser extent can play wide, you lose a lot of their capabilities by doing that and a specialist at keeping wide and whipping in crosses would be a godsend, we can "get by" without a doubt, but would like someone pushing the more traditional forward wide players, rather than .....converted strikers doing it

:D

So at RB Spurs now have Hutton, Corluka, Gunter, Chimbonda. Though with all the injuries, the fact Chimbo can play across the back four gives the choice to take less chances with injured players.
Hutton has a bad injury and when he's shaken that off it will take him a while to get any form back. Remember how bad he was at the start of season? In a relegation battle we haven't got the luxury of having him straight in the team. So I'd write him off for pretty much rest of season.

Corluka isn't a RB, he can cover that position. Though when he does he's solid but offers little going forward.

Gunter isn't Prem ready yet, certainly not considering our league position.

For the money Chimbo's a decent signing.

Nice move that.

Wonder who will be first choice once flapper is fit.
Possibly Spurs best signing since Woodgate.

First choice is whoever keeps the most clean sheets? Cudicini has a chance to make the No.1 jersey his as he walks straight into the team with Gomes injured.
Cudicini, who I've rated as the 2nd best 'keeper in the Prem for years behind ony Cech, just might do that.

I hope so... not because I don't like Gomes as I really rate him aswell but if he does it means Spurs stay up :)

Duddicini is a gret signing as spurs were short in goal.

Seems that Harry wants to get back the players Ramos offloaded in the summer!

Chimbonda is a good signing as he does like to get forward and as already said can play accross the line so offers good cover.

Now, for another solid midfielder and striker!

Cudicini, who I've rated as the 2nd best 'keeper in the Prem for years behind ony Cech, just might do that.

I wouldnt go quite that far, but he is definitely an excellent goalie (whatever price is paid, but especially for free....although some rumours sugggest there are performance payments)

Reina (maybe not this season, but last couple)
Given
VDS

are all as good if not better than Cuddicini imo (Cech as well but you mentioned him :))

VDS is not in Cech or Given's league. Cuddicini is also better than him.

Utd have had a back four that makes it a lot easier - but VDS has kept Utd in numerous matches in the last few seasons, to make them double winners last season and the EPL again the season before

Cech isnt the same keeper this season as he has been either, and its highly debatable Cuddicini is better, I wouldnt argue with him being equal though

Yeah, that's what I was going to say it's a lot easier for VDS to keep a clean sheet due to the superb defense in front of him.

I rate Given as the best in the league, I think he would be a superb buy for either United or Arsenal.

A friend just told me theres rumors of 6m and koumas for joe ledley from Cardiff, not up on sky sports website but apparently on tv.

I'm honestly surprised it's taken Cuddicini so long to move on. He'd be first choice at so many other teams in the world, never mind just the Prem, and yet he's been happy making about five starts a season for the last four years.
