What symbol is this?

My parents have a WWII Navy officers dagger, how much are these things worth, can I nick it when I'm back home and go all i7?

They can go for a couple of hundred with proper collectors, sometimes more. You'll find though, that the less collector types will generally go for the 'Hitler Youth Knifes', as it has more of a 'stigma' attached and more well known as they have been popularised in modern times.

Well this is one they have (well not the exact one obviously, but you know what I mean). They did ask me to try and find out how much it was worth a while back. Seems about $700 is the rough guide from Googling.

Not really interested in the value, trying to find info on whether I can keep them, wall mounted or something.

i found a nazi badge in a recycling centre and bought it and have had people going "why did you buy that!? you're a bad person" kind of thing.. As if somehow my money is going towards the nazis.. Lets not have this thread derail into a "OMG you're supporting the Nazis!" thread.

This is what I'd do :) Get them polished up - would make a nice display piece.

It pees me off no end that there's a stigma to owning this sort of stuff. Another thing I hate is that a lot of excellent music that was composed by the Germans during WWII never sees the light of day now due to the association. As wrong as the Nazi cause was, some of the marches composed back in the day were awesome - very upbeat, optimistic and generally good stuff.

Looks like a nice item then. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an 'authority' on WWII items, or any such thing. I don't collect them (mainly due to money and space), however I do have a keen interest in the wars and studied them amongst other modern history.

It's a shame the Nazi's stigmatized the swastika, as it's a beautiful symbol and within it's true meaning before the Nazi's got hold of it, meant a totally different meaning than what it stands for today.

Agreed. Now when you mention Swastika => Nazis automatically spring to ones mind. 'Tis a shame. :(

Awesome pieces. If I were you I'd put them in a nice display cabinet, out of sunlight.

Indeed, but definately find out the story! It might be a complete bobbins story, like they were bought at a car boot, or other such tripe. However, it might have a really good story behind! :)

Like he single handedly fought his way through a nazi machine gun position.

I have no idea why you couldn't keep them.

It depends on the type of sword. Last year a ban was brought in or Samurai swords (meaning 50" curved blade), but there were exemptions. However, legally these should be fine to own. But always worth checking if you're worried :)

And yes Neil, something like that :p

Don't get them cleaned and like Spie says keep them out of the light if possible.

A friend of mine is a bit of an authority on this sort of thing, he recently valued a small collection for a colleague and she gave him an almost mint Hitler Youth knife from the collection as payment for his advice.

I'll have a word with him about value etc but I'm almost certain it's legal to keep.

Marking on the actual blade of the bigger of the two.

Don't worry Leon, won't be polishing them:)
