Hi Guys,

Just passed my test today (3 minors) and am on the road to saving up for the car.

Since i started taking lessons the only car ive taken an interest in is the Ford Puma. They seem to be priced well (Good one for around 2k with decent miles) look nice and are quite nippy.

Thing is though the insurance is going to sting, when i started i weighed up the cost and it was around 1.5k but now it seems to have shot up! Im looking at around 2k now, which makes me think...What car?

The original plan was a 2000-2001 Black Puma 1.7L 125bhp...

Is there a better car i could go for? Or perhaps a couple of tricks to tell the insurance company? ;)

Any help appreciated! :)

Im 21 but dont live at home :( Is it still possible to do that?

Also i did think about the Focus, would you say its a better option? I know its bigger but abit slower?

As long as you're the main driver and they're the named drivers then yes - you can stick anyone you want covered on there.
As for reccomendations, a Fiesta perhaps, as its rather similar to the Puma but presumably cheaper to insure due to being a hatchback?

Oh really? So they just need to be named? Dont they care about the fact of them living about 250 miles away?

No - its not a case of "insure this household", its a case of "insure me, plus these people who drive this car occasionally". If this is just in-case then they won't fuss over it, its when its the other way around and you put them down as the main user that things get a bit dodgy.

So would i save quite abit then? Might have to raid confused.com in abit then.

Any other suggestions on cars?!

Btw thanks for the help! :)

So lost without any knowledgeable family or friends to ask!

Thanks Neoboy, so nothing major needing doing to it? Cheap to run etc?

Well already looking at insurance quotes its a hell of a lot cheaper! Around the same price of the puma and not that much slower really.

Well got a minor problem where can't open it from a drivers side but I'm too lazy to open up the panel and have a look at it, probably something minor. I'm also not a small bloke so this car is much better for me than your usual corsas/fiestas/saxos etc in that sense. It's not actually that big either so easy to drive and park although if I am being picky the back pillars are a little on a thick side so restrict your view out the back a little, but I'll get used to it and the thing is very spacious too.

As for speed I can't really comment as I'm really unexcited by cars and it's only a 1.4 engine (yeah I know I'm suppose to avoid those) but it's fast enough for getting me from A to B but I thought it was pretty cheap at £1150 anyway. Insurance wise me and my friend both found www.ecarinsurance.co.uk by far the cheapeast.

Actually neoboy you raise a good point about height. Im 6'3" and actually not even sure if i can fit in a Puma...I guess i'll need to try some out.

1.25 Fiesta Zetec or 1.4
Rover 214 / 216
Peugeot 306 1.6 / 1.8
Clio 1.4 16v or 1.6

These are the ones i'm currently looking at for my first car :) They're all similar insurance groups. May be some to look at, although my budget will be 1k, so it might not be of any use to you :p

Focus for 2k, surely?

EDIT: Congratulations, also :D

Please let me know if you manage to solve this problem!

I've got the 1.6 and can say (and I'll get laughed at here by the older lot) it's nippy for us newer drivers.
