I am at a turning point where it is not economical to upgrade and cheaper to replace the entire unit. However my current rig still do fine as a web/Word/Download machine, my sister has her own PC and my parents don't use PCs.

So what do you do with it?

Same with Laptops, i guess with PC at least you can take it apart but not so with Laptops.

Yeah, I was also wondering this, my old laptop is just sitting under my bed in a box, it isn't in a fit enough state to be sold but it seems a waste to throw it away.

You can still scrap the HDD, RAM and sometimes the optical driver from a laptop and sell them seperately, even the keyboard and screen might fetch something somewhere, theres bound to be someone with the same laptop, depending on just how old it is...

Other than that, the local tip / scrapyard are usually more than happy to take them off your hands, I think local councils offer a service now too, but I've heard you have to pay for that, never used it myself mind you.

How would one go about doing this?

Curiosity rising...

I took apart the screen surround so that it was just the panel attached via it's cable (not on the hinge) and then flipped it over (like a tablet), found an old photo frame that was the right size and mounted the whole thing on the back. you could strip off the keyboard etc to save weight, but the usb on the one I was using was broken so needed the keyboard for configuration. I have it connected via single cable providing both power and network connection (can use wireless though if it has it). Mine's just running XP with a photo screen saver on it (comes on 10secs after startup) there are linux distros specially for it though.

Ive got an old laptop with a broken screen that i took the ram, cpu and hdd out for spares, also a full socket a athlon 1800xp rig thats been siting idle for years, ill probably end up dumping it.

I have a further 2 machines, aside from my main rig in sig, an s939 a64 4000 system and a laptop. I think the only worthwhile part left in the socket a rig would be the geforce4 ti4800se graphics card:D

That socket A one will go on the MM most definitely I would have thought.

Could strip it down and sell on parts individually or keep as spares like the ram/HDD/dvd drive etc...

:)
Some bits of it may be useful as spares, such as the ram, it only has a cdrw:o. Offered it to my 12 year old nephew a while back, he laughed and said, what that ol museum peice.:D

I know where i live there is a few places that accept older hardware to give out to people who cant afford to buy, or to people with learning disabilities.

I always see people selling old stuff at unreal prices in local news papers, not sure if its becuase they are trying their arm or really just do not understand how much prices bomb out in the real world.

In saying that the only computer we have gotten rid of was a p1 1xxmhz thing which i blew up so it went to the dump.

But if you are going to just bin something at least give it away to somewhere that will make use of it .
