I am looking to do my DAS I have only ever ridden a bike once on private land, I know the basics of the clutch, gears, and brakes but thats as far as my knowledge goes.

I have a full car licence at the moment; as I undestand it I need to do a CBT, motorbike theory then I am OK to do my DAS which gives me the option to ride any bike I wish straight away (I think? - could someone clarify please).

I understand that the DAS test is changing in March this year, and was wondering whether it was worth waiting until then to do this? My reasoning being that if the test is harder I should learn more whilst doing my DAS training, and therefore be have greater knowledge from the training and be safer riding a bike. Is my reasoning sensible or should I go for it ASAP to be done before the new test comes into effect?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I am about to do my DAS as been informed the new test will A) be harder and B) we further away from my home town.

I have booked my thoery and have it in 2 weeks time. Then some lessons and test around the £350 range.

Then I will look at buying a bike. Always wanted one and now at 37 I feel why not! then just need to decide on what 500-600cc bike I like. So many out there.

I know nothing about bikes. no friends with bikes, so just thought that size was ok. Anyhow when I eventually (if) pass my DAS then I will start to look at bikes. I know Bandits, Hornets, Fazers are recommended etc though

Depends what type of bike you want... I wouldn't entertain anything but a sportsbike while I'm still young and supple bodied ;) . If you know what style you want then it makes suggestions a lot easier :) .

599-675cc is more interesting ;) .

I agree, although you could cut out the chaff in the 599-674cc range :p

Although I would also reccomend a 400cc sports bike like the VFR/FZR/ZXR/GSXR, nowhere near as quick as the 600's, but plenty quick enough and the VFR (NC30 at least) is a match in the corners to the 600's (at least with my limited skill :p)

It's finally reached a point though where the Sports 4s are so long in the tooth you're either paying too much for a really well looked after example or a reasonable price for what will eventually turn out to be a crapper.

Pretty much any bike will do. For the first few years of riding it's almost certainly going to be you holding up the bike and not the other way around (providing you're not riding a 50cc moped.)

You're best off looking at styles of bike (commuter, sports, sports touring, touring etc. or naked, half-faired, faired) than looking in a certain engine range.

i took my cbt last week, i have never ridden a bike before, let alone sat on one before hand, i have been driving a car for 6 years however

i went in quite nervous, but in less than 4 hrs he was stamping up my cbt certificate, easy as pie dude. Got my theory 2moro, and then my DAS in 2 weeks time.

You can take the DAS as long as your 21 or over, otherwise you will have to take the A2 licence which puts you on a 33bhp retriction for 2 years (if you hit 21 during this period, you can take your test on a 500cc bike to lift the restriction early)

get it in before end of march, will cost more etc, you can always ask about advanced rider training if you want to be more confident with a big bike once you pass.

I personally got told by a friend of mine who has been riding for 3 years, and before that hadnt ever ridden a bike either, his instructor reccomended a honda cbr600, bullet proof engines, fast enough that you wont want another bike for ages (unlike say a bandit or fazer) etc etc, so i took his advice and got one myself!! its sat in the garage waiting :D

great forum for bike info as well as how to get your licence etc!!

The cost of the test has already gone up, even though the new test hasn't been introduced. The government snuck it in at the end of September when the new test was originally meant to come into force.
Training may be slightly more expensive, but not much.
The real issue here is how far away the proper test centre will be from you after the new test is introduced.
A work colleague of mine did his the same way as you, CBT, theory and then DAS all in a week (the centre sorted it all out for him).
He said that, for some people it may be a bit much to take in trying to do it all that quickly.
