Dumb i know, but im sure i heard before that once the car starts to reach the limit on how much petrol it can hold it will cut out automatically?

Am i right?

96 Punto is the car in question.

James.

Yes thats correct.

Also depending on the filler neck design it may cut out prematurely if you try and fill it up too quickly.

How do you mean?

Man im gonna struggle aint i, i passed first time yet i cant poor petrol into my car, i dowsed myself in unleaded when trying to use a jerry car, interesting incident that was which my mate found highly humerous.

This is correct, but how petrol pumps do it, I don't know :p

Once you've filled your car up once, you will know the capacity of your tank in litres, and the rough cost, so you will know for next time when you are nearly at a full tank.

Suppose, i just hope the thing cuts out because it will be very interesting if it dosnt..

Look up the capacity of your tank first and then you can keep a check on how much fuel you put in. Most of the time the cut-out is pretty reliable, but on my Focus Diesel you have to be on the ball and listen out for a final swirl of fuel because for some reason the cut-out doesn't kick in as quickly as it should on this car and you can spill some fuel.

'course it will, theyre designed so they do. itd be a bit daft if they didnt wouldnt it?

Suppose your right :)

Worrying about nothing eh, just wanted to make sure :D

About 8 days until i can afford to get it running, man this is killllling me!! :D

A few vans I have filled up never cut out on time due to low angle from filler to tank. And busses im sure just drive about with the hoses still pouring the stuff out!

Did your instructor not cover basic things like filling up the car?!

Mine didn't, its not exactly hard lol. I didn't know that it cut out either but i found out when i was going to put £40 worth in like i usually do but it only went to £30 odd due to the lower prices.

It does. You don't need to think about what happens if it doesn't, becuase it does.

Not always. I had the misfortune of being covered in petrol after a pump failed to cut out. It built up pressure and finally sprayed out of the hole everywhere whilst the pump was still going.

It was quite a dangerous situation but the staff at the petrol station didn't seem to care. "It does that sometimes."

BP didn't care either. Apparently my car which filled up every other time and cut out perfectly was faulty, not the mechanism on their pump.

1) Stick nozzle in car
2) Squeeze the handle
3) Stick the screw part of the filler cap in the space below the handle and the bottom of the nozzle to hold it up
4) Stand back and put hands in pockets to keep them warm
5) When it goes click, the tank is full.

*steps 3 and 4 may not be legal.

Does anyone remember when pumps used to have a clip/latch on them to hold the lever in place and fill the car whilst you stood and spoke to your mate whilst smoking a cigarette?

They still have them in France/Germany, it's rather handy and stops your hand aching especially when you have a massive tank :D
