The Nokia 5800 Express Media (Tube) Thread

Nice mini-review. Always good to hear user opinions.

A quick Q to anyone familiar with the way these phones work. Is it possible to play alternative video file types such as AVI, either with the pre-installed apps or third-party ones? I'm used to using CorePlayer on WM (PDA rather than phone), and I'd like to have this functionality on a smartphone. Sorry to deflect the discussion a little, but it seems to me that fully functioned and flexible media playback would be a killer app for this phone.

There's a version of CorePlayer (or whatever it's called these days) for S60. :)

Is it resistive or capacitive? Looks excellent, apart from it looks cheap as hell.

Resistive since capacitive is rubbish for Asian text entry.

There has been discussion http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17929197&highlight=5800

Personall as much as I really want to get one just to try, I am giving it a miss. Users report a lot of bugs on symbian forums, and unless a firmware upgrade works miracles I think it's a bit too much of a pain for me.

N97, now that may be another matter... though the decision to use an old CPU, include no graphics acceleration, and no xenon flash, is a dissappointment.

EDIT - Must read the whole thread... :D

Ok - couple of quick observations after a couple of hours with it.

I was suprised at how small it actually is, very similar in size and shape to the N73 I used to have. It's quite light too, almost a bit too light. Overall it lacks the premium quality feel but that's to be expected given the target market / price.

The screen is nice and bright, not as sharp as I had expected from the reviews but maybe I've been spoilt with the touch HD. It also seems much smaller than the iphone screen even though there's not a lot in it. However watching some of the supplied video content it's perfectly adequate for watching some downloaded TV etc in the Gym or on the train etc for shortish periods of time.

Pleasantly suprised with the touch screen interface, all very easy to pick up and intuitive, response seems very good and very little missed selections and frustrations etc that I got with the HD. Haven't had the stylus out once which goes to show, I like the haptic feedback too which adds to the reassurance. As the reviews have picked up you single click in icon mode and double click in lists which is counter intuitive but presumably necessary to avoid miss selecting when scrolling through lists. Have found it reasonably fast and not laggy. The landscape keypad is a breeze for text entering and a real bonus.

Like the sprung switch on the side to lock/unlock the phone.

Haven't had time to play with the camera and web etc but email set up was a breeze and v easy to use.

Overall I think it does what it says on the tin - very easy to use, touch works well on the Symbian interface much better than on WM and well featured for a mid range phone. Bodes well for the higher end models I think especially if they can engineer some more quality feel to the devices.

Interested in others views !

Awesome mate... have you tried the GPS yet? If you could check video quality that would be awesome! Is texting fast? Noticed any bugs? Does the small memory amount feel noticeable in terms of lag and responsiveness? Do you prefer it to the Touch HD? So many questions...

Never had much luck with touch screens. Generally ditch them after a month or two. I'm a heavy texter, so would be interested on peoples view on ease of use?

Prob just stick with my battered N95-1 for now. While the battery isn't great, it's a solid brick that'll take the knocks of every day life.

hmm am I missing something here, this fones around 300ish off ebay, spec wise looks better then the iphone 8 or 16gig 3gs and can be had for almost half the cost sim free ?

Sorry been out most of the day so not much more time spent on it, haven't tried GPS yet, really need to find a good navigation client for it as I've never got on with Nokia maps. Don't think IGO support it which is a shame as it's excellent on the Touch HD, think Garmin XT might though and hopefully TT at some point.

Texting is excellent, the full screen landscape qwerty is superb but even the normal numerical keypad is good.
Haven't noticed any bugs and speed / responsiveness is better than the HD imo although it's difficult to compare the 2 devices as has been pointed out they are very different beasts.

Have been playing around mostly with the video playback tbh as that's what I wanted it for mostly, whilst the screen size does not compare to the HD the quality of playback and picture is excellent given the right source. Have just converted Kung Fu Panda to 640x360 MP4 and it is superb. Colours and contrast is very good and playback is also smooth and stutter free.

Also have to comment on the Audio - the inbuilt speakers go very loud and are adequate and through some good headphones it sounds great too.

I tried a bit of web browsing and tbh wasn't blown away - found it a bit hard to get to grips with the zooming and scrolling etc but more time needed I think.

So as said above I think a bargain phone for the money tbh, certainly worth a look as it will give the HD and iphone a run in the capabilities stakes but tbh it does feel like half the price as a piece of consumer gadgetry with it's smaller screen and budget construction..

After 1/2 a day of using the phone I was pretty disappointed but now having had it for a couple of days I really like it. Internet browsing whilst not quite as good as the iphone/ipod touch is excellent. The large screen is fantastic for browsing/video. Its size for be is better in the hand than the iphone (less wide). I am disappointed with the camera, its very poor in bad lighting/indoors - ie you can pretty much forget using it indoors if you dont like grainy photos. Outside , it does take good pics though. The speakers are fantastic - listening to mp3's through them is a a pleasure. My bone of contention is app compatibility, there are a few apps that arent compatible (slingplayer and coreplayer dont work for me) lets hope this is resolved soonish, this may be soon as the sales for this phone have been pretty staggering (1 million shipped in 30 days)

Thanks for the feedback guys, it sounds pretty good. I am dissapointed to hear about the camera though, as thats a really important thing for me in a phone. Samsung i8510 is still top of my priorities then.

I was in the Nokia shop on Friday to give the phone a go. I had about fifteen minutes with it and I was quite impressed. The screen was very good for the price and the phone sat nicely in my hand. I didn't have any real problems with the touch interface; I even managed to get on pretty well with the mini keyboard using only my fingers.

I used my N95 to set up a wifi hotspot (giving me internet on the demo model), and browsing was decent enough (although I think I'd still prefer Opera Mini for most sites). I gave the music player a quick whirl as they had some tracks loaded on the demo model and I had earphones on me (Shure SE110). It was noisy in the store (even with the relatively decent noise insulation on the phones, but seemed as good as the N95 for audio output.

All in all, very impressed by what could well become an almost ubiquitous phone (like the 6300). I'm waiting for the N97, but I'd recommend the handset to anyone on a lower budget or who is just taking their first steps with a smartphone.

The more I use this phone the more I like it, loving the simplicity of it and still haven't resorted to the stylus once !

Have also found the usability of the standard alphanumeric keypad so good for text entering that I tend to use that rather than go to the full screen qwerty for the quick text etc, however if you wanted to do some heavy weight typing or long texts etc the full screen one is excellent too.

Only four configurable shortcuts on the home screen but not so bad as you can enter profiles, clock, connectivity through touching the top bar on the screen as well as the drop down menu from the media key of course.

Not many themes about yet for it but have put the Aston Martin one on for now which looks very cool :)

No crashes or glitches so far fingers crossed and I do think this phone has the potential to become a classic as it does pretty much everything out of the box for a great price.

Only couple of gripes for me is the screen size which I would have liked to be bigger as the form factor of the phone makes it appear very long and thin and the overall lack of quality feel of the materials used..

Can't wait for some of the higher end implementations from Nokia !

Sneaky Peaky, are you using the protective case with the phone? Do you have any issues with it? We found ours to be particularly tight, and thought it might scratch the phone if we continued to use it.

Yep - I do use it, does seem quite snug but I don't think it should scratch it. Time will tell I guess !

Given the amount of handsets supposedly sold in the UK in the first few days of launch I'm suprised there aren't more people on here with it yet or is it too low end for most of the OCUK afficienados ? ;)

Just another update - the battery life is bloody good, I think I could probably go 3 days, after moderate use (using internet, camera, music player etc). This is rather liberating after having had an N95 8Gb for around 18 months, and having to charge it every night.

I think the poor camera is putting me off tbh. Ideally this would have had the same 5MP unit that's been around in the N95/N82 for over a year already, and the N97 would have had a newly developed 8MP unit with better IQ.

There's no excuse imo for not adding a relatively cheap sensor that's been around for donkeys now on other phones for so long imo, even on a "budget" touchscreen, and it would have really let this phone make a mark.
