Diesel cash guzzlers: It can take 28 years for them to be cost-effective

I beleive so, it sounded rubbish (Altho not a valid criticism really) wasnt that quick but more importantly returned a shocking 32mpg over a 200 mile drive.

So versus the 55mpg from the diesel you'd buy the petrol?

I've said before I'd have a Mondeo diesel over a petrol after my experience with a Mk4 petrol hire car. The economy was terrible for what it was. It delivered the same economy that my 530i delivered the last time I made a similar journey and the 530i was considerably faster. It was poor.

So I'd have the diesel instead.

/me awaits that to be quoted out of context in the very near future, something to the effects of "Fox said he prefers diesel over petrol" and completely forgetting the fact that he's talking purely about the Mk4 Mondeo and not any other car(s) in existence.

It is a misconception that I am anti diesel. If the diesel in a car drives better, I'd have it instead of the petrol. I enjoy driving the 530d, and I appreciate and like decent diesels.

What I am anti, however, is people buying diesels to save money/because they feel its more economical when they've done absolutely no research into it beyond saying 'I need a diesel'.

I am fully aware of that, having been round here from the days when you drove & loved your Xantia! ;)

It's also because of that I know how comments can be misquoted to twist to someone else's point of view or to make a convoluted point which is completely not relevant! ;)

The Xantia is a good example. Why did I buy that? I wanted something cheap to run - I wanted MPGz. Obviously a petrol car would do 25mpg around town whereas my Xantia did 34mpg so it was obviously much better and much cheaper.

Right?

Wrong.

Citroen Xantia's. Those were the days. lolz. There was a time when there were 3 of them between me and my friends!

Your mate had a VSX and I was so jealous. I also used to argue with the morons who had petrol cars about how totally wrong they were and how deluded Dolph was for going on about wheel torque.

I've been there, but I've recovered. With help, the rest of you diesel drivers can recover as well ;)

There was an Activa in there at some point too, 3.0 V6 and no body roll. Cant even remember who had that.

Was moi, or at least one moi, and was 2.0 Turbo old bean. Had a VSX at the same time. And the activa got 20mpg all day long and had a staggering 150Bhp....but boy could it go round corners!

Nah it was someone from town (Henley), to be honest i cant bloody remember but someone i knew (i will have to ask around my mates) had the V6 xantia i think.

TBH i think everyone has had a xantia at some point, its just one of those cars :p

Edit: TWO GRAND! My SX of about that age was 200 quid and that was absolutely years ago :p

could have been a transplant then, popular mod. Either the V6 or the 2.1 Derv lump. I sold mine to guy who ran a Xantia forum who was putting the derv lump in!
