I've currently got 4x1GB of OCZ pc6400 running on a gigabyte board in a sugo. They can get very very toasty when the pc is under load, in fact you can't touch them!

I've got the chance to swap for a new set of corsair 2x2gb pc6400 which is at 5-5-5-18.

I'm sure the heat issue isnt helped because the heatsinks are so close with little airflow. The 2 sticks would help a little, but would they be much slower?

This swap wouldn't cost me anything btw.

In an intel system you wouldn't notice the difference in performance.

Having just 2 sticks will also put less strain on the NB

If its costing nowt id go for it, leaves you the option to upgrade to 8gb in the future if you want to.

This is exactly what I am doing today, going from Giel-4x1gb 4-4-4-15 to OCZ-2x2gb 5-5-5-18.

I'm doing it for future expansion and trying to keep the heat down. I have recorded speeds from my old setup and will report back with my finding after I have had chance to test.

cool thanks, i'm hoping it will be nothing in it.

I have my OCZ-2x2gb 5-5-5-18 running now and the only difference I can see are to tiny to bother me, with the largest being a loss of 100 points on 3dmark which is nothing out of 11200.
So all is good here.

Sorry...i read it as 1x4gb....my bad..

Then the only outstanding is wouldn't 2x 2gb give you two extra slots later on in life if you move to 64bit and need an extra 2x2gb to make 8gb.

Hi

I went from 4x1GB 6400 4-4-4-12 to 2x2GB 8500 5-5-5-15 and notice no difference at all just a major increase in Ram MHz from 800 to 1032.

Prob gonna go 8GB soon too so all is good.

3 reason I changed over to 2x2gig.
1 - I can now expand to 8 gig for just £30, not bad at all.:)
2 - Someone here told me having 2gig blocks puts less strain on the system.
3 - My 4x1gig where a dull orange color, where my new 2x2gigs are shinny silver and sparkle when I shine a torch on them. :D

I found that the Geil 4.4.4.12 clocked to 1066 well and at 5.5.5.16 so no performance loss or gain to be had, just needed a fan to cool then and they are good solid ram
Flog them on ebay and recover some of the costs

Indeed...this is core reason, i think this should have be 1)!
