Homeless man gets 15 years for stealing $100 !!

[Standard OcUK High Horse response]

One hundred dollars!!! Cart the bum off to Guantanamo, vile, dispicable person!!!

[/Standard OcUK High Horse response]

But yeah, in reality; wasting tax payers money to keep him in jail for 15 years....for stealing a $100 bill? Get real, what the hell was this judge taking that day in court?

Agreed he robbed a bank, but he got $100 and he even turned himself in the next day through guilt. Let's be honest people have done far worse and got off lightly.

Oh wait, it's Louisiana, a country in the deep south and the offender was black...that about wraps it up really I suppose.

That's because we have a joke of a legal system. But that's for a different discussion. :)

Maybe you should read some of the comments written by Americans that are attached to that article.

Their justice system is the real joke it seems.

**** off that sending someone to jail for 15 years for stealing $100 is in some way representative of a decent justice system.

Rehabilitation and education facilities in a US prison? Are you kidding? Funding for such programs has been cut to the bone for decades and under Bush it has all but disappeared.

As for justice eventually prevailing I don't know where you get such ideas. There are people in US prisons on minor charges that have been there for decades. These appeals don't just file themselves you know and getting a court appointed lawyer in the South to show up to court sober is a major accomplishment, particularly when his client is "only" a black man.

Why do you think the US has the largest prison population in the world?

Yeah, sounds wonderful out there

I think there should be reduced penalty for people who turn themselves in...
Not only that but:
Tbh it's a joke, a random chav keying your car or kicking of your mirror causing hundreds of damage would never get into prison for 15 years. The laws should be adjusted to the amount of damage caused/stolen. Imo it's much worse causing thousands of damage than to nick 100...

Bank robbery is a federal crime, so they will sentence him to a long time in prison. Those comments you want me to read, say in an appeal he will get his sentence reduced.

The fact still remains our justice system is a joke, you cannot say anything other.

Well, still, couldn't care much if it's a federal crime or not: for non lethal crimes they should be adjusted to the amount of money lost/caused in damage... People get away with much worse things., causing much more loss of money or stealing much more.

Yes you can. Have you ever been to jail? All these 'its a hotel' comments make me laugh...yeah, sure it is.

What do you actually know about our legal system? I happen to know nothing, thus I don't go round making ridiculous claims about it but at least can guess that its nowhere near as free and easy as you make out.

Some of the comments say it will get reduced, others say it won't and that he's stuck there forever. Also, suprisingly, the American commenters are more on the side of the homeless guy than we are.

And all the "what a clever guy, he's got a home now". Lol to that.

Anyone know what the minimum sentance for 1st Degree Robbery in the US is? Because if it is 15 years then the judge may well have just given him the minimum sentence allowed.

I am not talking about our prison service being easy/like a hotel, I am talking about the sentencing being a joke.

Louisiana First Degree Robbery

LA R.S. 14:64.1

A. First degree robbery is the taking of anything of value belonging to another from the person of another, or that is in the immediate control of another, by use of force or intimidation, when the offender leads the victim to reasonably believe he is armed with a dangerous weapon.

B. Whoever commits the crime of first degree robbery shall be imprisoned at hard labor for not less than three years and for not more than forty years, without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of imposition or execution of sentence.

the laws the law. no excuses. if i'd done the same thing i'd expect the same sentence. as he was homeless the judge did him a favour. as long as he doesn't become institutionalised that is.

That sums it up.

I dont' see how people can justify taking away someone's freedom for 15 years on the back of the need to steal to eat.

I can asssure you prison is not a hotel, but it beats sleeping rough , starving, being freezing cold, and not washing for years, wouldn't you say?

Then again we have bag lady that wonders our town all day, then she goes back to the nut house for the night, and is back out first thing, apparently she's absolutely loaded, was left a fortune in a will, but chose to live like she does, bit crazy me thinks!

But I agree with the comment on the keying car / mirror, we had exactly that, went on holiday came back, someone had booted off our wing mirror.

Didn't even report it to police what for, no wittnesses , wasn't even in the country when it happened, what the police gonna do?

These scum bag chavs get away with vandalism to the tune of hundreds of pounds, and don't even get an ASBO half the time.

It's not USA or UK justice that sucks. it's all justice, in all countries, my old man lives in Thailand , if you wanna see coruption, go to thailand, ACAB that's what I say.

Bent cops, bent judges, bent politicians, it's all a load of No Swearing!!

And this news article prooves it! regardless of nationality!

This nothing compared to the guy in California got
25 years to life in prison for stealing a slice of pepperoni pizza off kids
under California's "three-strikes" law.

Our system is very soft and a joke.
