Best time to buy a car?

I'm thinking of buying a new car and was wondering whether or not now would be a good time to drive a bargain or wait a few more months. After the government bailout of the car manufacturers perhaps they won't be so eager to sell or offer discounts.

What do you think?

After the bailout, they will continue manufacturing, but that doesn't mean a shedload of Joe Publics will be ready to buy cars.... Honda have just mothballed thousands of cars, for example due to lack of sales.

Any reason why you want new and what car/type of car. Obviously you're gonna be able to get a better deal on a V8 4*4 right now than a tiny eco-car.

I would like to get a 7 MPV for the family plus we always have grandparents coming to stay - I had my eye on the Ford S-max, although the Picassp C4 looks nice too

Any reason why it needs to be new or are you willing to consider say a 3 year old example for less than half the price?

You can get a good deal on a new one now and I know a Ford employee that can put me forward on an embassador scheme which gets a bit more money off, also I like the 3 year warranty.

Waiting for the right time is not really going to help you and currently is as good a time as there is to buy and waiting will not really help that much as the best deals are not mainstream but are deals based on circumstance.

Dealer who had too much stock he needs to shift quickly
Owner who needs to bail as they have lost their income and need to get out quick
Finance reclaims (I know of supercars in fields!) that are being sold off

These are where the real deals are. Walking into a dealer and asking for a car today will see you get a solid deal if you know what to ask and how to drive the sale through but the best deals are not done like this. They are done by keeping your eye on auctions, specific dealers who have cash flow issues (not something that is obvious) and not buying brand new. In Q4 2008 for example I am awae of 2000 major manufacturer 4x4's being 'recalimed' due to missed finance payments for example....yes, that is 2000!!!

Can buy a warrenty from another company for a couple of hundred quid a year. 3 years shouldn't cost more than £1k. Doubt you'll get massive amounts off with an embassador scheme.

I know nothing about MPV's but unless they are gonna knock 40%~ off the list price for you I doubt it'll be worth doing.

i may be wrong, but isnt march a really good time to buy a used car? because the 09 reg will come out, a lot of people will be trading in old cars to get a new 09 car, thus there is a relative flood of cars onto the used market. or am i talking rubbish?

equally with new cars, come march and the 09 regs, surely the dealers will be trying to sell off 58 pre-registered cars fairly cheaply?
