Stopped reading there... with only 512mb of ram your gonna really struggle in any game at that res with bells and whistles on. 1gb is the standard for high res gaming. clearly you havent done much research into ur gfx card and performance your likely to get.
I would suggest reading forums and reviews much more before buying any computer part. Especially with the amount of 'spin' certain companies put on (nvidia being the main culprit these days).
Yeah you can....![]()
4870 512mb to 4870 1GB isn't a very good upgrade unless it's going to cost you next to nothing and you have a 30" monitor. For an upgrade you would want a 280 GTX minimum. Even that isn't going to blow your mind from a 4870.

All sounds like a load of rubbish. The truth is your computer specs sound fine, you sound like you installed it all properly but just had a bad experience.
Could have been down to anything really, possibly just a duff graphics card, i certainly don't think the patronising comments are needed though.
I'd say 512mb of a 4870 is more than enough to run most games smoothly at high res with all the settings whacked up.
Bengaboy, honestly, I wouldn't base my opinion on how good the card is solely based on how well it runs Crysis, especially as the game isn't very well optimized to run on ati hardware. Infact it isn't very well optimized at all. You mention performance gets worse in the later levels, well it's a pretty common fact that Crysis's framerate slowly degrades the further you advance in the game. I was running it on a [email protected] paired with a gtx280 and my fps used to frequently dip into the 20's towards the end of the game. Also, you'd probably see an improvement if you upgraded your system ram to 4gb, as 2gb really don't cut it these days (iirc it says on the back of the box that 2gb is the minimum recommended). As loadsa would say, "the 4870 can even beat the gtx280 when 8xaa is applied".![]()
Well before ATI even released a 1GB card most people on this forum (and others) were claiming quite the opposite...
So who's to blame? the OP for not doing his research? or a bunch of ATI fanboys who went around the internet spreading lies?
Even games like stalker was bad though
Even games like stalker was bad though - I think I was expecting too much out of the card to be quite fair. I was expecting it to play everygame (bar crysis) at max res and settings, and games like COD4 suffered.
Think it was just down to my bad luck, and am feeling another go.
Hmm, maybe you got a duff card then mate, as it definately should be chewing through Stalker and COD 4 without a problem.
GL
If you play Crysis Warhead with GTX 285 or 295, you won't be disappointed. Don't buy graphics cards from ATI again, they suck.
COD 4 and Stalker is not Stalker Clear Skiesesp in dx10.1 with volumetric light on highest ( all settings maxed @1900x1200)
so nothing wrong with card, just that game is a beast, although I must admit I haven't tried again with latest patch 1.7
, and I was playing the original stalker.
So maybe the drivers have improved?
What was the point of the thread if you sold the card 3 months ago?Errrrr, I think you lot have missed a beat here...
I sold my card a loooooong time ago, and I was playing the original stalker.
So maybe the drivers have improved?
EDIT : 24/10/2008 to be exact is when I sold it
