Is there any need for PS/2 ports nowadays?

Not really, (some dells don't have any), but one way to look at it is that if you use 2 of those usb to PS/2 adapters then you free up two usb ports.

I need it, every now and then my USB mouse decides it needs a change and I have to use the PS/2 port.

After a while it gets bored with that and decides it's time to use the USB port again.

I still use ps2 a lot as mention legacy support but most usb keyboards work even if its disabled just at post screen. But the main reason I use them is at work, all my kvms are ps2.

PS/2 keyboards are still in use in some cases, particulary for BIOS support for ones that do not support USB when you need to change settings.

I use KVM switches and machines without PS/2 ports are a pain. I almost didn't get my current P5Q-E as it only has a single PS/2 port.

You can get USB KVM switches but they never seem to be as reliable as the PS/2 variety. If I need to connect a USB only machine I usually end up using an USB to PS/2 adapter and even then you can get problems.

Dell are now bringing PS/2 ports back. The second generation of Vostro desktops now have PS/2 ports and Dell makes a point of mentioning the fact. On the higher end home machines and the business targeted Optiplex range they never went away.

I haven't used a ps2 port in years now, and haven't used a floppy for ages either! Roll on technology. Admitdly the windows F6 problem is a pain.

The irony is PS2 was invented by IBM and was the port on all IBM PS2 (Model 30 and 50)machines back in the 80's , moving forward through the 90's the port changed from the IBM PS2 to the Microsoft AT, you know the big ole keyboard connector.

Then all of a sudden they decided to go back to PS2, lol even Bill Gates couldn't stop the move back to the IBM PS2 port, well it is a nicer size wouldn't you say!

However, with the advent of USB, looks like MS might have finaly got rid of the last remenance of anything IBM in an IBM compatible PC.

Well I find it funny if no one else does :)

I really dislike PS/2 ports so even if I had a PS/2 keyboard I would use an adapter to USB. I have like 10 of them from various products over the years. Time to let go!

Damn I just checked, my Striker Extreme has them :( *tapes them up*

My current keyboard is still PS/2, there's not a huge amount of need for them now but I'm more than happy with my current keyboard so it would be a shame to replace it just because the port was removed to no purpose.
