As per title, if you had £3k to spend on a daily runner what would you buy, not a mondeo/focus just beacuse you think it would be the sensible choice, alkthough if you would then feel free.

Another added twist, its all very well saying they would get a 2.0 focus as there "like a grand now", prove it and provide a link.

The 3k would not include insurance or running costs by the way :D

18 months ago i spent my 3k on a focus. mainly because i had zero NCB and a fault claim and the 2.0 zetec was the quickest thing that was sensible money to insure. now i'd do it differently.

opposite ends of the spectrum here - a V6 Ghia X mondeo, or an MX-5.

Not sure, If I was susgesting to someone else it would be a Punto Mk2, but cause I'd like to try other cars it would be a Mondeo/Leon.

Surely that quote is the wrong way around.

If I was recommending cars that WORK, and aren't crap, I'd recommend the Mondeo/Leon. If I was being rather daft and stating that I like to buy nails because they are "different", I'd recommend the Punto.

Each to his own. We had 8 years of trouble free motoring and compared to other people who spent money on Corsa's/Clio's as first car's the Punto was a nice car. Cheap to run and insure and nice interior with enough mod-cons to keep me happy.

If say I became broke, had to sell everything and only had £3k to spend on a car that I needed to 100% work it would be a Mondeo, if I had £2k to spend on a car that I needed to 100% work it would be a Punto because the difference between a £2k and £3k Punto is not worth the extra money.

People will always bash Fiat for reliability and stuff but in the 9 years now of owning Fiat's my family and I have not had a single issue.

blah crap we already know about your previous punto!

Around 3k your looking at corsa, fiesta, clio if you want a smallish car or astra, focus med hatchbacks and of course the ocuk favourite the mondeo!

personally i wouldnt know without getting a group i was interested in and then just looking for the right deal.

Toyota MR2 Turbo (SW20) and spend the change on mods/tidying it up. I've always wanted one. Otherwise, I might opt for a FD3S RX7.

3 grand....think I'd buy this and spend the rest of the money on upgrading a few bits on it.

Yuck, apart from the V8, does it have any redeeming features?

For £3k I'd be tempted by an Alfa GTV V6, but it would have to be for fairly low mileage use as the budget doesn't sit well with fuel and other running costs.

For something a little bit more sensible, perhaps a Clio 172.

Comfortable, reliable, easy to get more power out of the engine. Handling doesn't really matter as it's not a sports car or even a mildly sporting saloon car, and the looks aren't particularly offensive compared with some stuff out there.

And I suppose it is also superbly practical and economical too?

Give over, it has no redeeming features other than the fact that it could possibly be turned into a (better looking) cube of reclaimed metal.

Ah, yes. Economy. I was completely ignoring that, given that a) the OP said the £3k didn't include running costs so I figured all bets were off in that regard and b) they aren't actually that expensive to keep fuelled.

The EPA quotes fuel mileage for a 302ci (that's 4.9L for the mathematically challenged) Crown Vic at 16mpg in town, 24 at highway speeds. Now, those figures are using US gallons so converting to Imperial gives ~19.2 and ~28.8 respectively. I wouldn't have said they were pathetically thirsty cars. Parts are cheap, because Ford built eleventy squillion 302ci V8s and a good number of Crown Vics over the years, insurance is cheap....

I'm struggling to see why you'd think they were expensive to run. Or can I put this down simply to the traditional OcUK American Car Bashing™? ;)
