Hi I want to rip some cd's to my pc for use on my mp3 player. Im ripping with lame mp3. The default setting is
-v 3

Should i change this to anything is this the quality setting?
Thanks, Ross

In what way sounded terrible? It's the default for a reason.

Go educate over on hydrogen-audio.org before moaning about LAME.

It was really crackly. Im not moaning im just stating how it was. Dont give me that stupid attitude.

Whats the command line for v0? do I just use --V0? thanks for your help Mattey1.

Code:
-V 0 --ta "%a" --tt "%t" --tg "%m" --tl "%g" --ty "%y" --tn "%n" %s %d

dont forget to allow it to add the tags (which is what the additional switches in that code will do). and dont forget to tell your ripper to download the cd info from cddb as well :)

I think v0 might be a bit overkill for me? Its just to put on my mp3 player and on my computer but my headphones are not overly good. Does v2 still retain enough quality?

Yes - you will notice zero difference.

If v3 sounded terrible then something got screwed up prior to the actual encoding process.

Attitude? I said go to ha for a reason...namely...

it'll tell you about all the switches, bit rates etc. There's also a whole load of information on there.

As already stated MP3 won't make your music crackly, that's down to something else.

I'll not bother giving any advice next time you ask don't worry.

I'm using Lame front end vers 1.2. This converts from .wav to mp3. I keep my CD's in wav but use this for posting my "creations" online as mp3. If you want a long winded but good way to do it, rip your CDs with dB poweramp music convertor (for which the CD to wav ripping is free) the encode with Lame (LFE) :)

Thanks :) Im now using an application called all2lame which is basically a frontend for lame which copies the tags across.

Its working well at V 2 with nice filesizes :)

Thanks for your help everyone (well almost everyone)

I am using EAC with Lame, I am happy with the results and have had no unwanted sounds like crackling as mentioned above.

+1 for that. I've just ripped 400+ CDs (with another 200 or so to go) and EAC + lame has done a spot on job at -V3.

Burned a few back for car compilations and they sound just fine. Could have done them higher bit rate/better lame quality, but to be honest, for what they are being used for it would be a case of diminishing returns and chewed up disk space on the media server.

Of course, as ever, others may have different experiences and opinions.
