After re-installing my XP OS when I shut down the PC it has the habbit of turning back on after some time.

I know about the stuff in the BIOS that's not it, last time I had to turn something of in System manager.

I've checked the obvious things like network card but that's not set to wake the PC either.

Someone must know how to do it, I've carn't for the life of me remember what it it is and it's driving me nuts.

Help Please.

A friend had the same problem as we built the same PC's. He had the problem I didn't.

A while later I formatted the HD and installed XP again and had the same problem he had, the PC would shutdown but then some time later it would just turn on again. I did get some help and had to turn something of in the System manager and I never had the problem again until I did a fresh install of XP in December. Now I carn't find out what it was that I turned off.

It may have be ACPI but if I turn that off I don't think you can turn it back on again and I don't know if I need it or not.

Last time I had this problem it took about 5mins to find a fix, this time I've been looking for a while and carn't find what I did.

my first thought was some sort of "wake on packet" feature. Unfortunately i have no idea apart from plug it out when finished using it but that is no solution

I've just come across that option myself, my network card says "Wake up Capabilites" and then has various options the currently selected one "Magic Pattern and Pattern Matching"

It does have an for option "none", I'm not sure what these options do. Under the power management option "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" isn't ticked.

I have read where ACPI may be the problem but turning it off can have adverse effects on the PC.

It's not the biggest issue in the World but as I sometimes need to leave the PC on while either downloading or Video editing I carn't set it to turn off when complete.

It looks like setting "Wake up Capabilites"-"Magic Pattern and Pattern Matching" to "none" has done the trick and it stayed off al night.

It's because it has to be turned off in two places in XP that trough me.

Cheers.
