Will a 4870 run on a p965 mobo

Hi, I have bought a saphire 4870 1Gb but i am now wondering if it will run o.k. on my P.c. which is a gigabyte P965 ds3 (see sig) as i think my mobo is only pci express 1. My new Graphics card is being delivered on saturday so if i have to cancel the order i will need to know. If anybody can help it would be much appreciated

Not a lot slower, maybe a few percent. The biggest deal with PCI-e 2 is that it gives the card more power. Presumably the card can compensate by drawing more from its external connectors.
 
I've been out of the hardware game for a while now. Don't click order until someone else comes along and verifies what I've said. I'm 99.9% sure I'm right, but I'd feel terrible if you were out so much money because I'm misinformed. At least with someone else you can blame both of us. :p
 
I would just have to update my mobo, Ram, CPU and power supply if it won't run the 4870, at least i will have a good excuse for the GF when i tell her i have to spend about £500 on new components ;)
 
ive recently upgraded from a 965p ds3 and had my 1gb 4870 in that mobo and all was fine, infact i havent seen any difference in speed on my now p45 mobo, well not till i put a second one in there.
 
oh also wouldnt worry about your psu either, peoplle on here have 2 4870's running on a 650 watt psu so you should be fine with 580

It's not the wattage that's the issue, it's the fact that, that specific model of PSU has a very bad reputation for blowing up :p
