3m-high tribute to Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at Bush

I don't understand - they're criticising GWB for using violence yet spending time and money erecting a statue condoning it?

Wtf. He didn't shoot him.

I'm suprised he showed that much restraint to the guy whose ultimately responsible for invading his country and making a complete mess of it.

I am not getting into the morals of who is right or wrong.

However throwing a shoe you're right is not like he "shot him" but either way it is still violent.

Are you suggesting I could launch a shoe at you without you deeming it as violent?

No.

I should have worded it differently. But throwing a shoe at GWB isn't violence to me. I am talking about the context of the situation.

Building a monument to it is hardly a great crime either.

I think the monument is relatively funny.

However you are suggesting it is not violent just because it's GWB, because of the victim you disregard the fact it is still violent, thats my point; simply throwing a shoe at someone is an act of violence (albeit it a low level one, depending on the shoe of course). I don't think much of GWB either and again thought it was amusing! :D

Yeah, I admit that I my OP wasn't very well thought out. But then I was replying to Tute's and (to me) that post doesn't seem very well thought out either (unless I'm taking it too literally, as mentioned above).

But also, throwing a shoe is a mark of disrespect in the Middle East, etc. and a form of protest, so I don't really see this particular incident as an act of violence although of course, I get that it is at heart 'violent'.

Let me get this right....

Invading an entire country (for non-existant reason) with the worlds most powerful army, devastating its entire info structure and causing the death of countless tens of thousands of people = throwing a shoe (& missing)...

I didn't say that, but throwing things at GWB is going to solve nothing. The reaction of the shoe thrower and the people who erected the statue just smacks of childishness tbh.

(for non-existant reason)

9/11 is non-existent? Funny how when Americans die it seems to be less of a tragedy than when Afghanis/Iraqis do.

devastating its entire info structure

An infa-structure that trains terrorists?

and causing the death of countless tens of thousands of people

Source?

Not sure he meant it like that though, simply saying just because of the wrong GWB has done, throwing a shoe won't solve anything.

Ah, so 9/11 and saddams dicatorship was just made up...

I don't think it was childish - it's a legitimate form of protest from a different culture.

So it's okay as it was "from a different culture"?

You could apply your argument to GWB's invasion of Iraq/Afghanistan.
