Concerned about new BFG GTX280!

Hi all, when I furmark'd my GTX280 I bought recently today, it went to 94 degrees celsius?! And it was still climbing so I aborted the stability test mode.
My case cooling isn't all that bad at all, it's a tsunami dream...

Played some warhead just now and after a while (hr roughly) got some square-artifacts on-screen, i've not seen these on my old card.

Am trying to register my card with BFG for warranty purposes but having no luck saying UPC numbers are not recognised and serial numbers too...Not sure what to do now...

Is the HSF poorly installed? I know it can be a hot card but the air coming out is EXTREMELY warm and can't touch the metal for more than 1s on load...

Cheers

does sound hot. i know gfx cards are supposed to handle high temps (think like 105c then it goes into safe mode), but my 4870x2 never comes close to that temp, may want to try rma -> bonus and get a 285 ;)

think you should get 50-80 temps when idle/load.

Something isn't right - it shouldn't even go over 70C - tho you might need to tweak the fan profile for that.

Actually it should be able to go over 70 Deg C. Its suggesting operating range is high 70s. There is a temp limit of 105C as said above, however realistically you shouldn't operate for any considerable time above 80Deg C.

Furmark does have a habbit of heating up cards quite a bit. You should force the fan to 55% or so, then run through vantage or into the pink, and note the temps.

Furmark heats up the card like nothing else, the fan should run at 100% ~3100rpm at anything over 85C and that should stabilize the temp, does the fanspeed increase on your card at all?

If its working correctly it shouldn't go above 90'c. Sound like you have one thats overheating. Mine sits around 87-89'c in furmark. Previous ones that I had with the overheating issue climbed to over 100'c before throttling / crashing.

Artifacts RMA it mate!

Also make sure you are putting in the correct codes and spelling them correctly!

I was using O (O's) instead of 0 (zero's) or it was the other way round :)

I havent had mines confirmed for unlimited warranty or what yet but sent it back regardless and it is with them just now! Artifacting in games however I didnt get crazy temps like you!

Crysis, Far Cry 2, GTA etc will work your GPU hard and thats where I seen the issues so I made a not of those games during my contact with BFG!

Is it an OC version by any chance?

Try different drivers that may help,my BFG 280 GTX OCX idles at 44c and runs about 55-60c when running games.
I use EVGAs Precision tool to monitor temps.

Thanks for the replies all, much appreciated.
Fan is set manually via rivatuner at 55% atm, any more is audible and tbh should be enough to cool the card I think.
Drivers are 181.22
It IS an OC BFG card yeh
It's idling at 50 deg atm, but as I said furmark and intensive games appear to be really heating this GPU up beyond upper-normal range.

I wouldnt think that having to up the fan speed is a reasonable solution anyways!

Try downclocking the Ram mate and see if you encounter the artifacting problems, that confirmed the ram to be the culprit in my case :) Best way to tell!

Well I just ran 5 loops of crysis tool @ 1680x1050 settings High and FSAA x2, peak temp recorded by rivatuner was 86 degrees, so I reckon an hr of warhead last night pushed it over 90degrees, seems reasonable.
If I can't register the card online with BFG what would I do then?! Gonna give it another go later...

That is the problem, you are limiting the fanspeed when running Furmark, should it be set to Auto the famspeed would go to 100% and cool the card, 55% isn't enough now and in summer will deffo not be enough.

If you really don't want a fanspeed higher than 55% you are better off selling the card and getting a 55nm model or investing in a 3rd party cooler.

You cannot RMA a card when you are not using the recommended fanspeeds

I'll set it to auto then and see if it spools up more.
Regardless BFGTECH website is saying my serial number is invalid so maybe someone has registered the card before?

Warhead tool gives artifacts right at the beginning of a loop then they don't come back, peak temp was 85deg and the fan did spool up to 63% from 40% baseline
Maybe its only a problem with warhead thus far, not sure atm tbh

i noticed that my fan doesnt alter its speed or im not realising it (on my GTX 280)... everytime i go to play a game or run a test on my gtx 280 i set the fan to direct control and slap it up to 100%

I notice some artifact like glitches on my 4850 (and other cards) at the start of Warhead but my card is completely stable. I think it might be Warhead that is at fault. Overclock the card a bit and see if the artifacts get worse or stay the same.

Warhead also gives me some graphical issues when Furmark/3DMark'06/Fallout 3/Mirrors Edge are all stable.

when does the fan (gfx card controlled) spool up from 40% to 100%?
I think it is linear or another calculation based on load as well between ~55C and 85C, anything below ~55C is 40% and anything above 85C is 100%

The only think I changed is the lowest fanspeed of 40%, I set that to 35% as that lowers the rpm from 1300 to 1100
