UK's LOWEST PRICE - Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 GFX Card - £144.99 +VAT

This is oh so tempting to just take the plunge with but I will need a new psu as well as when I had a 2900 pro the pc would restart sometimes under heavy load and I'm pretty sure it was down to my psu and these 4870s required 2x 6 pin power iirc so would be similar troubles :/

Got a q6600 / 2 hdds / dvd-rw drive so would be pushing it methinks!

Please can someone check how long the card is.
I am considering getting one, but space is an issue.
I had to get the Dremmel out to fit my 8800GTX.

Well I gues i'll find out on monday if there is much difference between the 512mb and the 1gb 4870's!

Damn you overclockers, seeing deals like this on payday is not good for my bank balance!

Mine just arrived (well half hour ago at work, back home now, gonna bench crysis on my 4850 and then see how much of an improvement I get on the 4870 1Gb...

Don't have a tape measure, but put it along the narrow bit of an A4 sheet of paper (8.3 inches) and it was between 1-2 inches longer at a guess, so say 10.5-11 inches total as a guess, probably a bit over the actual length.

Just did some crysis benches for a laugh (and to test the new card a bit):
Cat 9.1's, 1900x1200, High details and ran no AA, 2x AA and 4xAA

4850:
No AA: 19.99 Min, 26.23 Avg
2x AA: 14.43 Min, 19.12 Avg
4x AA: 11.58 Min, 17.65 Avg

4870:
No AA: 25.08 Min, 33.27 Avg
2x AA: 20.61 Min, 25.96 Avg
4x AA: 21.39 Min, 25.23 Avg

So not too bad an increase, think my cpu ([email protected]) is holding it up somewhat but I can live with that, until I see a nice wolfdale/yorkfield temptingly cheap on this week only :p

NIce to see a big improvement over the 4850 :) may convince a few people to do the upgrade! Especially since this is a cracking deal :D

That is a nice increase stock vs stock. What many people fail to realise is that the core speed differences between the 4850 and 4870 are more important than the RAM type or speed. Much of the 4870's advantage is through core speed rather than DDR5. I'll run a through benches on my 4850 overclocked to 775/1155 and post later.

edit: results below for 4850 @ 775/1155.
1920x1200 0xAA 32.36fps
1920x1200 2xAA 28.95fps
1920x1200 4xAA 18.41fps

okies well my 4870 has finally arrived have been waiting all day for it lol but i have a problem :/

with the 4870 in my system it will not boot it, going by the error led's on my board it stops at his stage

Initializing Video Interface
This will start detecting CPU clock, checking type of video on board.
Then detect and initialize the video adapter.

this is on a MSI P35 Neo2 FR board with a 600w psu what do u guys think, might be the problem?

is it something to do with the pci-e slot not being 2.0? my 8800GT boots fine and its a 2.0 card, the PSU as its 600w and would think it could cope with the new card.

any idea guys?

gah was really looking forward getting this new card fired up for some testing will have another couple of goes at trying to get it working.

thx

I take it you did plug in the 2x PCI-E power cables?

I just hooked my 4870 to my Abit AW9D Max, with an E6600 @ 3.7ghz. Vista x64 fired up without issues and then BSOD'd at the superfetch disk thrashing stage. I figured it was just a random issue so I rebooted and then it was ok so I installed the CCC 9.1's.

The last time I used CCC was back during my 9800 Pro days and its still as ugly today. Mind you, it's a lot better than NV's tired useless panel.

Fired up Fallout 3 (the one game I bought the card for :o) and it auto-detected the card and set everything to Ultra :) Going to watch a few videos and then really test the card out later.

So far on Idle GPU-Z states:
46c GPU Temp
Fan Speed @ 21% 1326 RPM

i bloody well give up, yup Kainz of course i connected both the pci-e power connectors, have even tried a seperate psu just for the gcard it was rated at 250w (would this be enough? i have a 400w some where will try this later) even then i tried with one connector from my 600w psu and one from the 250w but still no joy. with monitor, without monitor i can not get the fekker to boot. oh and the serperate PSU was plugged into another mobo to make sure it does actually supply some power, i would have actually tested with a meter to make sure but it's at work.

shove my GT in and it all fine

i'm going for ma tea canny be bothered anymore at the moment i'm very disappointed, might have another mess with it later but this SUX.

my 1st ATI card too bahhhh!

any more suggestions guys?

What brand PSU are you using?

Would one of these fit in my silverstone sugo1 case, and would it have suffcient cooling?

Yes and easily, we build systems with the 4870 X2 card in them and have no issues.

I personally ran a Sugo system for a couple of years as my main rig and never had a single issue with much hotter graphics cards.

If you can, try another mobo. I had an 2900XT once that refused to work in my MSI K8N but worked fine in everything else. Both worked fine but they hated eachother.
