Decent restaurant (for Valentine's Day) in Winchester?

Need it to be close enough to walk from the station so town centre is ideal - I am coming from Basingstoke via the train rather than driving so my wife and I can have a couple of glasses of wine and a stroll.

Anyone have any suggestions, please? Thanks :)

Don't go out on valentines day it's horrible, restaurants full of couples trying to force romance because the greeting cards companies tell you todays the day! The restaurants hike the prices and drop the quality because it's like shooting fish in a barrel, stay in cook something nice and relax and unwind with a nice bottle of wine or two.

You're supposed to love each other 365 days a year not just for a few hours one evening a year!

Dude, we love each other every minute of every day and we are out eating at least two or three nights a week so it's not a "special occasion" per se - my health situation is that I probably won't be around to see another 14th Feb after this so I want to make it a little special/different. The plan is to not have to cook/wash up at home just eat out and let other people take care of it and then back home to a couple of bottles of champagne :)

very true, but every girl likes abit of romance, and even if you both agree not to succumb to the commercialism of it all, I bet deep down your missus will feel abit sad. generally blokes who talk like you don't even do the romance thing, whatever floats your boat though.

of course everyone should keep the love thing going all the time, if you cant you shouldn't be with each other, but it's still a good excuse for a lovely night out and to push the boat out abit :)

I agree a nice home cooked meal could be even better than eating out, as long as you make a effort and don't open a can of baked beans and just fart all night.

Been a while since I was out & about in Winchester & it depends on your budget.

Brasserie Blanc - Raymond Blanc's new place on Jewry St. May be difficult to get a booking.
Loch Fyne - Also on Jewry St. Very nice sea food & some decent venison steak every now and then.
Charles House Fusion - my folks said it was pretty good, lots of different types of things.
Mr So - Also on Jewry St. Very very nice chinese.
La Place Bistro - just off the square, supposed to be good, great review from the folks
The Wykham Arms - The other side of the Cathedral. Always used to be great & an amazing place, not been there for 8 years or so though I can't be sure that the grub is still good.
The Black Rat - bit of a walk as it's right down past the mill. Rave reviews from the folks.

Both share the same kitchen and RB is not that good (well it certainly wasn't when we last went). Also, it is always full of oldish people. Costs more than LF for the same food too! Out of the two, would go to Loch Fyne without question.

Two very nice restaurants, about 3 doors up from Mr. So is Dim T which is ok and then a bit further along on the opposite side of the street is Cellar Peking which is better than Mr So.
There is also Charles house itself which is at the bottom of town, probably 15 mins walk which is a nice Chinese.

Never been here so won't comment

Never been here, but have heard mixed reviews over the last few years. By all accounts it use to be the puppies undercarriage, but may not be that good anymore

Never been here so won't comment, but yes it is a long walk from the train station.

Depends what type of cuisine you are after.
We like the Ghurhka chef which is literally 5 mins (if that) from the train station. Very nice, they do Nepalese food in there, but no desserts!

Charles House has been a bit disappointing the last few times I've been, unfortunately.
Which Charles house are you talking about? The one up by the Westgate or the one down by King Alfred Statue where Café Rouge used to be?

EDIT: Never been there either, but always here good reviews about the Chesil Rectory which is right down the bottom of town (15 mins walk ish) Expensive but supposedly very worth it.

The on by King Alfred Statue.

It changed hands in November. I haven't been back yet. It was indeed very good under the old regime; I've been meaning to give the new place a try.
