I was having a debate with some workmates about aston villa, and the wonders martin o'neil has worked. The majority seem to think hes had a lot of money to spend, propelling them into a good position to break the top four. But have they even spent that much over recent years? i know of ashely young costing near 10million, but thats 10mil fantasically spent, especially for an english player these days!

O'neil has turned villa from an average mid table club into a possible top 4 club, and done it with an english backbone in the team. With other teams such as man city and spurs throwing money around without much success (a league cup) i think what o'neil has done and the way he has done it is exceptional. Is o'neil the best british manager behind fergie?

hes spent quite a bit of money this season

I think O'Neil is one of the better managers out there, in the Premiership. He has spent money, but then so have other teams. How much have Man City/Utd, Tottenham, Chelsea, etc spent?

Arsenal are probably one of the few teams who have a manager who doesnt like spending but gets good results.

Although O'Neil isnt in the same tier as Ferguson or Mourinho (who IMO are alone up there), he is definitely in the next tier, along with Wenger, Moyes, etc.

I feel that this year, Aston Villa are definitely punching above their weight and will probably finish in 5th, behind the current top3 and Arsenal (who rightfully, should finish in the top4).

If O'Neil leaves Villa though, I can see Villa dropping down the table pretty quickly.

I think you can look at what he did at Leicester City. He turned them from an Championship team into a solid Premiership team, that am sure never finished outside the top 10, as well as 2 league cup wins.

As soon as he left for Celtic, it all went pear-shape and Leicester drop out of the Prem.

He is a quality manager for sure :)

Say what?

Where did this right to finish in the top 4 come from?

Arsenal (who rightfully, should finish in the top4).

Not juding by the way they are playing.. They didn't even deserve to draw against us last Wednesday!

O'Neill has spent a lot of money to get where he is. Moyes on the other hand has had nothing to spend and we are still fighting for a decent place..

Aston Villa are a highly under rated team imho. Playing brilliant of late and it really shows that O Neil is a fantastic manager. Will be sad the day he goes....

He's spent no more than say Newcastle over the years, quality manager, I'm envious now because he's spending and we arn't. But I am enjoying them sticking it to Arsenal

Hang on a second, why is there some divine right for them to finish in the top 4? To be fair, we're taking advantage of them being crap. They've got no leadership, their players are low on confidence, and the only player who can score is Van Persie. Top 4 material that, I suppose, unlike us, a team high on confidence, playing good football, nurturing talent, and have many a player capable of scoring. We're badly missing Laursen imo.

I'm still surprised people think we won't get in the top 4. I will NOT be disappointed if we don't, but we won't get a better chance. Everyone seems to have this idea in their head that the "big 4" will be the top 4 and throws their dummy out when someone else comes along and challenges. We've had our fair share of luck, but as today showed, it runs out for everyone. Liverpool's luck's run out, now it's our turn. Quality wins you the Premiership, and Man Utd have that all over the pitch.

Re the money spent: £50m on how many players? 8 first-teamers and a quality back-up keeper for cheap. Man Utd/Liverpool/Chelsea spend that on 2 or 3 players, we've almost got a whole squad for that.

Yes O'Neill has spent plenty of money(especially this season) but you can't say Moyes has had nothing to spend.

In the last two seasons Yakubu, Fellani (both commanded big fees), Baines, Jagielka and Pienaar have all joined as well as others.

Villa have been poor of late and very lucky to win some of their games. In their last 10-12 games there have been maybe 2 or 3 decent performances. Arsenal and Bolton are the ones that spring to mind.

I dont mean that Arsenal have a divine right to finish in the top 4, however, it certainly appears that that is how things have turned out over the years. Before Chelsea were bank rolled, Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd were the 3 teams that vied for the top3 positions year in year out. Chelsea then joined them once the money came in. And thats pretty much how its been for a while.

If Aston Villa can finish in the top 4, then good for them. However, I just dont see that happening. I could be wrong of course.

I'm a Man Utd fan and before Mourinho arrived on the scene, if I could have the choice of any manager to succeed Ferguson, it would've been O'Neil. I rate him very highly as he is able to get the respect of the players and get them working hard for him.

The sign of a good team is when they play badly, they still get a win or a draw. When they play well, they win. Man Utd are masters at this.

I don't take anything away from Aston Villa as they know how to collect points.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Villa finish in the top 4 this season. The rest of the 'top 4' as it were have been very sporadic at times so has opened up the gates for another team (or 2) to force their way in.

Being a Spurs fan i would have wished it had been us challenging for the top 4, but i reckon it will be Man Utd finishing on top, Chelski 2nd, Liverpool 3rd, Villa 4th and Arsenal/Everton fighting for 5th.

Chelsea were actually good before Ambramovich, Ranieri spent but not insanely and had the team being very good. Still to this day the backbone of the team and the best players were brought before Abramavich's big money came in, and most of his money, the majority, has been on players who have already left or barely play a part in the team. Frankly Chelsea could have spent about 40-50million and still ended up with exactly the same squad they have now, well, ok a bit more, but not outspending anyone else. The special one certainly has a special talent for buying players, didn't get many good ones though. Mourinho is just Harry Redknapp with a bigger bank balance, bought everything that was available and ditched the crap later on(then trying to bring the few good buys to his next club :p ).

Villa over the course of the year have played excellently, over the past 8-10 games they've got some lucky results and haven't played as well, but to be fair, they've got a light squad that have played a most likely higher number of games on average per player than any other top 4 team because Villa have little in terms of players to rotate in, while even Arsenal have a quite frequently changing line up. But they've still defended superbly recently, just not been as good offensively, that doesn't mean they got lucky, or were bad, just not as good.

The frankly, fully deserve to finish above us this year.

But O'neill has spent, this isn't the first year he's spent a lot of money either, just the biggest(i assume). But he hasn't wasted much money at all, and mostly the bigger priced players have all turned out to be good value, if not exceptional, like Young would command a 25-30mil fee if he was sold now but really is invaluable to the team, at 10mil he was one of the bargains of the past few years and well worth the cost.

I wouldn't mind knowing exactly who was in the squad before he arrived, and if many are still there because I doubt theres many.

The simply fact is that he hasn't spent "that" much and has done wonders with a team of good value players and got them performing brilliantly. Well done to him, and they've all worked very hard to get to 4th.

I said early on in the season that they could easily brake 4th this year, I even dared to suggest I didn't think 3rd/2nd were wrapped up and out of their reach either. getting towards the 2/3 mark and they are gaining on Chelsea/Pool and they are doing it while not playing at their peak. All 3 teams have the ability to play better, if any of the improve they can push on. I think Man U's depth is simply unmatched this year, but anyone can run into a dry patch.

unless Arsenal magically sign people who can instantly start instead of Diaby, Song and Denilson in the next two days, our chances of top 4 are almost non existant, well that or Wenger drops the underperforming players and stops being a moron, which seems even less likely to me than getting 3 world class players in before the window shuts.

I can see villa nicking 3rd this season the way they are going, never mind 4th. If liverpool continue to choke it's a very real possibility.

Don't worry.

Arsenal are just going through a bad patch at the moment. I predict that in the next month or so, they will put together a string of wins/draws that will see them overtake Aston Villa.

I don't believe that Arsenal will continue to play as they are currently doing.

Lest we forget that earlier on in the season when they were firing on all cylinders, the pundits on Match of the Day were singing their praises no end and stated that they had a good chance of winning the title. People have very short memories.

My gut feeling is that Liverpool have had their golden period and will now simply hang on. The problem for them is that Chelsea have caught them.

Predictions:
1/2 Chelsea
1/2 Man Utd
3. Liverpool
4. Arsenal

The club has been transformed since Ellis stepped down and Lerner purchased them.

For years, the club was stifled with Ellis' refusal to spend decent money on top flight players. He also battled for control with managers leading to instability.

O'Neill is without a doubt one of the best managers in the premiership and I can only see fantastic things happening with the current set up.

I don't really like to knock Ellis because he kept Villa in the top flight but he was too cautious.

Considering he has spent less than half of what Benitez has spent, and had a much, much worse team to start with, O'Neil, to be only (at worst as of 6pm tonight) 3 points behind liverpool with the same games played so far, is amazing.

Well, not amazing, just testament to what a crap manager Benitez is.
