I was new to qwerty phones when I got my E71. First off I find typing on it's keyboard MUCH nicer than typing with a regular phone keypad. I remember when I needed to type long messages on my old phones, I'd be exhausted after... no such frustration with E71's qwerty.
The key's are rounded so it's quite managable to type even with blunt finger tips. I find that I use a combination of finger nails (you don't need long nails), side edges of finger tips and just blunt finger tips. Works fine and comfortable to type on, but of course I'd rather use my computer.
I never type with both hands... not necessary. I actually use just my right thumb 90% of the time.
I can't imagine a qwerty smaller than this but it works fine.
ed: only thing that can be perhaps a bit annoying is shifting between caps and numbers/letters, but I think that's designed as well as it could be. Still better than a keypad.
