Howdy,

With lots of snow forecast and the south downs over the road, I need a sledge.

Now I highly doubt I can go out and buy one, so ladies and gentlemen I need your ideas for a home brew one.

The closest thing I have to hand is a big lid off a water butt.

I have a B&Q local, so anything in there can be used too.

ideas?....

Years ago I remember kids using the red and white pedestrian barriers you get at roadworks, like these.

Piece of sheet metal curled up on the edge??
When we were kids we had a silver serving plate we sat on. It went fast (well what i can remember anyhow).

Fertilizer bag stuffed with some hay. Yes, I live in the country.

This. These go crazy because they kinda surf over the top of the snow rather than dig in like most sledges (does mean there is absolutely no steering tho :D )

The DIY route will be more effort than going to your local garden centre and picking one up but if you want to do it properly then a pair of old skis, a basic box frame (1-2" square tubed steel is probably easiest for welding and shaping) and something to make a platform (chipboard would do if nothing else) and you can make a very quick and unusual sledge. Steering probably won't be brilliant and it will be a lot heavier than a plastic one but once it is going it is very fast indeed.
