Rats are vermin.
Even if it's just for fun I'm all for it, who needs rats, best if the population is entirely exterminated ?
Probably not. they more than likely play some role in the eco system and killing them all would cause a massive increase in the numbers of what ever they eat. and decrease i what eats them.

My cocker is bread to do exactly stuff like this. He's always got his nose to the floor but I wouldn't take him out the nearby field and do it for kicks. If it was for food or a purpose like they keep coming in my garage and eating wires then yeah I would.
They hunted for food and clothes? They may have enjoyed hunting but they didn't do it "just for the fun of it".
I suppose my stance is if it serves a useful purpose then yes it's fine but you're doing it just for kicks then you've crossed the line. The rats aren't doing any harm so why harm them?

You can also join the list of needs to learn the basics of nature.They eat crops, spread disease and are classed as vermin.. So yes they do damage.. Go back to your city pub and leave other people alone, when you have no idea what you're talking about.
why not it's nature at work.....
Shoot them so its quick and clean so there is no suffering, and you get rid of the vermin maybe!

Anyone see Martin Clunes - A man and his dogs? They visited a barn and had some terriers loose. Then some guys lifted the hay bails and out came all the rats so the dogs could do their thing. When I still lived at home with my rents we had two jack russells and they were great fun!
You'd still need something to get them out of the holes though. and it would cost a lot more. (and they;d probably shoot each other
